And on your note on Franchise QB’s they are found by picking top 10 no doubt. That is the one position in football you have to lose to (hopefully) acquire as they are some duds as well. Elway hasn’t been able to acquire a franchise QB since Manning. However, the Broncos have won 3 Super Bowls with Old men who can no longer play the position at a high level buoyed by a strong running game and strong defense. Tim Tebow has more playoff victories then Matthew Stafford. Flacco has as many rings as Rodgers and Brees. There isn’t an exact science to building a competitive football team or hockey team for that matter.

Capitals won the cup after years of playoff failures.
Did they "learn" something along the way?
Maybe gained some experience, to climb over the hump?

They haven't drafted top 10 in years.

I realize I've just grabbed some obscure random team to prove this point

The defending nhl champions

Flacco has more rings then kelly and Marino combined.
Doesn't make him better, right?

No it means that defense travels and Flacco played his best when it mattered.

In regards to the Caps you have to assemble the best team. The Capitals had Ovi and Backstrom who were top 5 picks. If Kuznetsov was Canadian he would have went top 5 in his draft class. He fell due to Russian factor and stated he didn’t even know if he was going to come to NA at all. He was know as the best player outside of the NHL for years before finally coming over for the 2013/2014 season (he was drafted in 2010). So yes by having 3 elite forwards, elite goaltending, a great defense corps, and an elite coach they finally got over the hump last year.

Losing is toxic
- Der Kaiser

The Sabres, in 48 seasons have
-Not qualified for playoffs 19 seasons
-Lost in the 1st round 15 times
-Won 1 round 8 times
-Won 2 rounds 5 times
-Won 3 rounds 1 times

Their best success was found in these seasons
2005-06
2006-07
1998-99
1997-98
1979-80
1974-75

That is 6 seasons of being "successful", which is giving them some slack in defining what success is (win 2 series or more)

Historically, the Sabres have been toxic for 42 seasons.

Tom Wilson just got his 22nd goal this season

love him or hate him

he is performing stat wise, like a second line player, is paid what a second line player should get and is a force unlike the floaters we have

This.

Oh, and a roster full of individual players who are not mentally capable of playing a system to maximize the effectiveness of the collective team.

Gotta find a way to get Cozens if they don't get lottery luck...assuming Kakko is gone.

You mean to say he is outperforming Skunk?
No jab intended to you, rather the many who scoffed at paying Wilson what he earned and devalued his contribution to Caps success.

Great complimentary player. Does his job on a line with Backstrom and Ovi. Thought the price tag was steep but the numbers are there this year due to the guys he is playing with.

I don’t have many friends because I don’t like most people. In a world full of people I DONT like, his posts qualify him as one of the last people I would actually be able to tolerate in real life.

And I’m sure he has no idea what a hemorrhoid he is.

I find it funny that a poster or 2 who as recently as 7 days ago ridiculed your tank mentality for this season, well they/he have now suggested it might be best to tank next year as well, LOL!

Gold Jerry, pure gold!

- IonSabres

Big difference tanking for #1

The previous disagreement was tanking for 8th vs 12th- or before that a Top10 pick vs making the playoffs & losing round 1, picking 16th-ish
Which was a moot argument anyways bc it’s not like the current players were gonna try to lose
And it’s not like management could really do much to affect things 1 way or the other

UPL stopped 39/41 in a 3-2 OT win last night. Sudbury leading their playoff series 2-0

Boston College was eliminated last night and RHD Casey Fitzgerald (2016 3rd rounder) is eligible to be signed. Let’s see what happens there.

So tough to figure out goalies
Hopefully 6k is the real deal

Fitzgerald seems like a depth defenseman at best to me
Can’t hurt to sign him though

One better be for Goalofsson

And I'd love to see Borgen for a couple games.
