They were ripping on montour in the sabres thread too.
I think it’s difficult coming to a new team with different systems. Look at mcdonaugh last year with Tb. Wasn’t great but found his groove this year.
I think we’ll be saying the same thing with Muzzin next year. - bryant
But then he's a 30+ UFA and they'll have the same problem as they have with Gardiner this year. |

My bad. Instead of "journalists", I should have said "bloggers that live in their mom's basement". |

i dont disagree with babcock here although the situation is exacerbated by the fact that the depth options themselves got injured (rosen, gauthier, liljegren etc.) but I haven't really liked dubas as a gm so far.
the muzzin trade was good but everything else he has done has been pretty poor. Getting tavares was great but he was willing to accept less money and higher taxes to play in toronto so I think any competent GM could have gotten that deal done. tavares only considered 5 teams with SJ literally offering to make him the highest paid player in the history of the sport and tavares said no thanks, i probably could have closed that deal.
dubas' handling of the trio has been terrible. these guys should have been extended a long time prior. in the end each of them will cost toronto a lot more in cap space than if dubas got it done in the offseason. i get that it might have been hard to extend all 3, but he should have gotten at least 1 or 2 extended.
the worst part is when he keeps guaranteeing that those 3 will be extended. like wtf, they're not free agents, no one ever thought they were going anywhere. but by him saying that, it gave those players more leverage and you've seen 2 agents use that to get more money out of the leafs while the 3rd will definitely try as well.
i havent been very impressed by dubas so far. |

Probably not considering that Tavares said that Dubas and Shanahan completely sold him on coming to play for the Leafs. |

It doesn't matter how many uninformed fans say that Dubas should've signed Matthews and Marner before this season, it doesn't change the fact that Dubas could only sign them earlier if THEY WERE WILLING TO SIGN EARLY!
Why the (frank) would Marner have signed before a season that he gets to play with John Snakevares? He (frank)ing knew he was going to have a great season that would eclipse his earlier seasons in points, thus giving him more leverage for a higher salary.
Matthews signed mid season because he was already offered big money. Even finishing this season, he probably wouldn't have earned much more. Marner, before this season would've been hard pressed to get more than Nylander, but after this year he's going to get close to Matthews money, so why would he have been so stupid as to sign earlier than he needed to?
As for his guarantee that those three would be signed, it was part of his pitch to Tavares. Tavares wasn't guaranteed to come to the Leafs like you think. And part of his reason for coming was because of the great young players that Dubas assured him he would sign. |
