umm, not only are Montreal and Toronto your closest geographical cities but they are also both Canadian teams!! yeah, lets go American cites, wtf - gonch
I mean this in a good way: Canadians are nationalistic to a fault. I'm not saying "to a fault" as a bad thing or a good thing, just that you are possibly the most blindly nationalistic people on Earth. How else could people possibly explain thinking that The Tragically Hip and Nickleback are good musically (I'm kidding...no one actually likes Nickleback)?
I wish, at least at times, that people in the USA were more like that. |

As a fellow Canadian I can assure you it absolutely is not how it is. - BINGO!
Also Canadian and no, I will not be cheering for another Canadian team if the leafs get bounced.

Is that a joke? Americans are probably the most toxically patriotic people on the planet.

This post is beyond dumb.
“Hey, let’s cheer for our biggest most hated rivals because they’re geographically close and on this side of the border”.
That’s as likely as jabs fans cheering for the sens and leafs, or leaf fans cheering for the habs or sens........NEVER going to happen.
Do you also expect ranger fans to cheer for the isles and devils. Maybe philly fans should cheer for the pens. Will the oils fans cheer for the flames?

No, the South and midwest are filled with the "AMERICA, GUNS, TRUCKS!" people that give us Americans a terrible reputation as gun-toting, racist cowboys who hate everything non-American...yet they love to fly the flag of the Confederacy, who tried to secede from the US, so...yeah, that. But that's not what I meant at all.
I don't care where a team, band, product, etc. is from as long as I like it. Canadians seem to latch onto Canada-themed ones. Again, the Tagically Hip are a prime example. They're not a bad band at all, they're a good band. But because "THEY SING ABOUT CANADA STUFF!" they get elevated to God status. I mean, honestly, that's pretty cool in a way, and I can't say there's anything in the USA that everyone get behind in that way. |

It's not. I think as a whole we're better about not getting as stupid about symbols up here (the pledge of allegiance, for example, is creepy as (frank)) but as a collective I do think we have a real inferiority complex up here and get extremely vocal when there's even a small chance we've been slighted. |

It's extremely stupid to cheer for a team just because they're Canadian. Shouldn't all Sens fans start cheering for the Leafs if you're going that route since they're the next closest Ontario city? - Hunkulese
I personally don't care about anyone cheering for a professional sport team or another. It's just entertainment and you take all this wayyyyy too seriously. |

Times are better now in that regard. Must we travel back to the one day ago in 1955

If you're cheering for a professional sports team because of what country it's in, you're doing it wrong. - BINGO!
Hmm.. Maybe you should consult the nations Blue Jays fans on that one. |

It's a little different when there is only one team, but even then it doesn't hold. I know plenty of Yankees or Orioles or Sox fans...
Plenty of former Expos fans that will not cheer for the Jays either. |

I usually cheer for American teams if Ottawa is out specifically because I want Ottawa to be that first Canadian team to bring home the cup for Canada since 93.
As far as who I'm cheering for, mainly Sharks so Ottawa can get an extra draft pick but the only thing I really care about for the playoffs...
That Toronto gets stomped on. Just out of principle. |

All these conditional picks have me wondering about where the picks land. Would it be better for the Sharks to make the finals, and resign karlsson, thus lowering next years pick by having Karlsson, but then we get another 1st the year after? |

That has more to do with the fact that they're really the only option. It's pretty hard to live in Canada and grow up as an organic fan of any other team since you have to go out of your way and pay extra to get the coverage. |

This year Vegas.
Last year was Winnipeg.
If Vegas gets knocked out I’ll cheer for Calgary / Winnipeg. |

Beyond dumb is a bit extreme, but yeah, perfectly normal to cheer against your rivals. I was a huge Ducks fan for a few weeks about 12 years ago and became the Pens #1 fan during a certain game 7...
I do root for the Sens over the Habs though.
