Dzingle plays mostly wing so that wouldn't work and why would you trade a lefty dman for another righty when we have an abundance of righties already and out best d prospects are righties too?
- GPHawksfan

Good point about the LD for RD trade, I was thinking Miller was LD for some reason.

We traded assets to get rid of Hossa's cap hit just a year ago. I can't understand the rationale for reversing that to pick up Horton's dead cap hit. We would be better off to use this new cap space that we have on this summers' free agents with no restrictions on our Cap heading into the new season..
- 67hawks

Hossa had 4 years remaining that his $5.5M cap hit was going to restrict what Stan could do because that $5.5M would be counted in having to be cap compliant on day-1 of the season. The fact that Stan does not have that $5.5M on the cap this summer and 2 more summers after this one was the reason it made sense to make the deal.

On the other hand, Horton has only 1 year remaining so if the Hawks don't have anyone in mind to spend that $5.3M on this summer - use it as to our advantage by taking on Horton's contract which will drop off after the season in time for the new DCat/Strome deals to kick in.

OK ... back to my theme of the day - Anisimov.

What if the Hawks could acquire a player that would play a solid 3C, be younger, faster and more dynamic than Anisimov, be better than 50% on faceoffs, and not cost more than Anisimov?

As you will recall, I have already spent oodles of keystrokes lately scheming a way to use Toronto's pending cap crunch to wrestle a player away from them. It usually involved some trade package where the Hawks would get Kapanen and take on the last year of Horton's contract. So, how about a similar trade but instead of Kapanen we target Kadri? Something along the lines we send Anisimov to Toronto for Kadri and Horton's contract. Kadri has an extra year remaining on his contract than Anisimov does (3 years vs 2 years) but the AAV are about the same ($4.5M vs $4.55M). Essentially the Hawks would get the better player in the swap for taking on Horton's contract which helps Toronto with their cap situation. Other minor details could be added to make the trade work.

Thoughts?

- EbonyRaptor

Not a bad idea. Kadri is good and the question is, does he get enough TOI here too. The only thing which kind of bothers me, is that i have a strong liking or preference for a big hard nosed center and is ok if only an average offensive talent.

Is that Entwhistle? Just be at least proficient at the dot. This is the type third center we need. So while Kadri is good and your idea is not bad, ideally i am looking differentially at third center.

Not at all a big metrics guy but do look at them for some info. Eakin has a CorRel% of -6.5. That is bad. Like far below replacement level bad. kinda surprising to me.

My other thought is that I love the idea of taking on a salary for next year in order to get a high pick/prospect and a serviceable player, but if we're taking Horton (or Callahan), I'd like more than just Kadri.
- tvetter

Kadri is a nice player but he doesn't play on the PK. If one thing needs to get better next year it's our PK, but Hyman and Kapanen do😁

Going out on a limb - I'm going to assume that what we've seen from Perlini and Sikura lately is not a mirage and they both will have a role on the team next season. If that pans out, then the Hawks have their complement of top-9 wingers - Kane, Saad, Cat, Perlini, Kahun and Sikura, with Caggiula in the wings to move up from the 4th line when needed. Therefore, I'm not too interested acquiring a top-9 winger (anymore, because of the emergence of Perlini). A 3C or 4th line winger could be an area but even than it's more of a "nice to have" than a pressing need. Don't get me wrong - if the Hawks could get Kapanen I will happily send best wishes to Sikura, but Kapanen will cost a bunch and I think the difference between Kapanen's and Sikura's play will not be worth the difference in their AAV.

i thought your Capfriendly lineup was a good start. Murphy plays both sides so pairing him with a RHD in Miller is still doable.

Do agree, though, with others that Dzingel will want more than $3.5M. Even if he does, your proposed lineup still had some cap space left. You could use some more for Dzingel and use some to upgrade the 3rd pair defense or another bottom 6 forward. Ideally both but that may be tough unless both sign for less than $2M each.

Without running Capfriendly myself, not sure how all of that will then play out for resigning DeBrincat and Strome. Like where your ideas are going, nonetheless.

The nice thing is the Hawks aren't in a position where they have to unload salary. In other salary dump trades I've seen many where only draft picks go back to the team getting cap relief. We'll see, im very curious what happens over the summer

I'm with you on the wingers could be set if Perlini and Sikura are just scratching the surface of what's to come if they remain lineup regulars and show consistency. Just as an example (I'm sure everyone has their own ideas as to slotting everyone):

Saad - Toews - Sikura
Kahun - C - Kane
DeBrincat - Strome - Perlini
Caggiula - Kampf - RW

The pivotal player could very well be who plays 2/3C. Even if on paper the DeBrincat, Strome, and Perlini line is written as 2nd line, any line that Kane is on would not be considered by the opposition as anything less than 2nd line.

I also wouldn't mind seeing if an upgrade is possible on the 4th line wing opposite of Caggiula. In-house options may include Hayden, Highmore, Kruger, and Luke Johnson. I'd like to see what else is out there first before settling.

Marleau? You know Toronto has to ditch that contract. They won't want to help any team in the east.

Plus bonus player ???? Because we are being so nice to take on Marleaus' contract?

In a way our team is starting to look a lot like the Leafs

The latest, this morning, from The Athletic in the Western WC race:

DAL 91 Pts.; 88% playoff probability
ARI 88...53%
MIN 86...29%
CHI 85...20%
COL 83...10%
EDM 82...3%

- scottak

Dal: ends the season with BTB vs hawks and wild
AZ: 7 of their last 8 games vs playoff contenders
Min: Final 6 games vs playoff contenders with the jets, bruins and stars to close
CHI: BTB games vs aves followed by yotes may determine their fate
Col: Brutal final 10 games: hawks 2x, yotes, close out with blues, oil, jets, sharks
EDM: Have the sens. kings and ducks but after that its tough with final week menu of knights, aves, sharks and flames

out: EDM, Col, Min
in: Stars
maybe: AZ or Hawks

Lots of Perlini Sikura talk - my take is that one is on Sikura all the way -- the proper move on that 2 on 0 .... fake the pass and shoot. Not just hot potato it to your other forward.

Perhaps Marleau if similar to the Brad Richards deal. Does Marleau play center anymore, though? Thought he was playing LW.

Sikura didn't "hot potato" the pass to Perlini - he put a perfect pass right on the stick where Perlini had a slam dunk. Perlini wanted to be a good team mate and help Sikura get his first goal and botched the play. No way does that get hung on Sikura.

I think Marleau, at this stage of his career, really isn't an upgrade on the winger he would replace in the lineup. In fact I think taking TOI away from Kahun/Perlini/Sikura would be counterproductive to their growth as players just starting to find their stride.

30 flex

Being a hockey player myself and having insight to flex of sticks, this made me laugh a good 30 seconds, bravo. And you're right, so true, he's just terrible on offense with shooting the puck or having any kind of mustard on it.

Think back to that OT winner in Anaheim when he scored, even that was like the worst shot possible with an open net.

Heres to some great memories of yesteryear.
