No, he's 100% wrong.

If he immediately supported Reilley then the narrative would have changed to how Dubas/The Leafs support homophobia - which is not true. Dubas did the correct thing.

- TrashPanda

Agreed.
100% dubas did the right thing

It's going to be a distraction either way, that's TO media. So instead of getting hounded at a morning skate or whatever, they're getting it over with on a day off. Very smart
- Garth_Mctavish

Nothing to be distracted by.

It's 2019 - every city would go through the same thing.

It's not a distraction at all, everyone will have forgotten about it in a few days.

I don't know how anyone can hear a slur. It's the leafs so it's blown out of proportion but to me it's clearly "rag it". Something that I heard at the rink a lot, especially on the PP or PK.

People who think otherwise clearly want to believe something wrong was said.

edit: what would help is if someone from the lightening clarified if it was them. Would put this to rest

NHL officials spoke to folks on both teams, everyone denied that he said it.

On another note, our local paper had an article from Lance Hornsby regarding the paper bag issue with Roger Neilson back in the Ballard era. A good chuckle and a good reminder that our management team has come a long way from that era. Most of us are old enough to remember those times . And thankful that dark period is behind us.

So you believe at an Arizona Coyoytees game this would be picked-up and turned into a massive story and John Chayka and the player would hold a news conference?

Yes. I don't think you know how serious saying that actually is.

Are you aware how many more mics and cameras there are at Scotiabank? It took someone on Twitter saying they heard it to even start this.

Why do you think the 2 biggest issues with homophobic slurs happened to occur in the 2 biggest hockey markets. Just coincidence?

This would not have even been noticed or caught on mic virtually anywhere else.

My stating it would not have been as big of a story anywhere else, isn't me not understanding it, it's more of a comment on the market.

And BTW, places like Arizona and Tennesee have some horrible homophobic laws.

Are there more? I doubt it - I would think that there is exactly the same amount. The NHL mandates it.

Look that the NFL and NBA, even small market teams get a lot of negative press when stuff like this comes out. I don't think it makes a difference.

Bolding something doesn't give it any credence, even when simple spelling is a challenge.

Remember when the Leafs last played Tampa and they hit a mic on the glass leading to an EN goal?

I think the only logical conclusion is that the Leafs are trying to cover up their bigotry by physically destroying all mics near the ice surface.

Amen.

would be interesting if they could get some audio of old Leaf coaches such as Brophy.. .the slurs coming out of him including homophobic by today's standards would provide some much needed back drop for today's Rielly nonsense.

And coaches, trainers, GMs at the game. Should be a total free speech zone.

Ballard is no longer here to defend himself though.. I can only imagine how many times he would use the terms 'snowflake' and 'social justice warriors'

Ballard employed child molesters at the Gardens.
