I can't recall another time where 2 players are reaching for a loose puck, they make contact, one guy goes down, the other instantly makes a play with the puck and then gets suspended as a result. I don't know what I'm watching anymore. What's the other option for Jack there? Shy away and let the other guy go right on by with the puck? It's pretty ridiculous.
It's the same idea as a player seeing another player about to hit them and instead of bracing for impact they just turn around and get hit "from behind" drawing a penalty and possible suspension. It's boring and embarrassing.

I disagree, he hit him, and then played the puck, he didn't go in to get the puck, he went in to hit him. And you're not allowed to hit an upright guy in the head regardless of what part of your body hits him. He got crushed earlier in the game on a questionable hit, I'd be pissed too, but the only part of Soderberg that hit Jack was his head, that's hard to defend.

Edit: I looked at it again, he touch
ed the puck at about the same time as he hit him, but you still can't hit a guy in the head, no matter what.

McDavid's hit was malicious.

This was not.

The irony of Parros in the position to make these kinds of decisions is not lost on any of us. Dude must have a killer agent. Can you imagine their pitch?

"Hey here's a guy almost died cracking his head on the ice during a fight, enforcer extraordinaire, this guy should def be the one making decisions on player safety"

"Give that man a job"

- BeadyEyedDouche

I'm not even going to compare it to another play or female dog about the length of the suspension. On it's face, in a vacuum it was a quintessential hockey play. If anything they should use the video of it to show players the value of situational awareness. Keep your head up! The way it could have been avoided is simply by Soderberg not being a (frank)ing idiot.
Rule number one in pee wee hockey: keep your head on a swivel. Pee wee coaches are like broken records with that line. You go skating around reaching for loose pucks like that and youll have a short career. As you should. Id be more pissed if players didn't do what eichel did and just let the other guy go right on by. I can't think of a way he could have played it differently short of letting him go right on by. That's not hockey.

Good thing he didn't hit an upright guy. And in reality he braced for impact and Soderbergs head hit him behind his shoulder.
I would like to know how to avoid a guy that's out to lunch from head butting your shoulder blade.
Jack had one hand on his stick when they made contact and the puck was basically on his blade at impact.

Laines head was the principal point of contact on Mccabes open ice hit on him 2 years ago too. If you're skating with your head down and your head runs into another player who's fault is it really?

Agree

Did you see ek's thread? Voracek's hit was way more malicious but of course he is being a homer about it, what a joke

NHL explanation:

"Jack Eichel plays for the Buffalo Sabres. This in and of itself is evidence sufficient to warrant a one game suspension. A second game was included because we try to continually interpret our rules in different ways. Hence, Jack Eichel has been suspended for two games."

I think it’s even more nefarious than that.

Agreed.
I have argued both sides before too, doesn’t matter what teams they play for. This is just another example of the pussification of the nhl.

They hit body-to-body, straight on. Two totally different hits.

At best you can say he mistimes it, and actually got there late. He was intending to cut him off before Soderberg got to the puck, but Jack leads with his shoulder bunched up. He was pissed, I get it, and if he hadn't gotten crushed earlier you could make the argument it was a hockey play gone bad. They take into account the game state, other things that happened in the game, and if the player was injured. All he had to do was wait a fraction of a second, or change his angle of attack by a female genitalia hair and then absolutely hammer Soderberg with a clean check.

I like that he's not afraid to dish it out, but he's gotta make better decisions.

I meant upright as in for like a high-sticking penalty. If Jack hit him in the face with his stick that's a penalty. He wasn't falling to the ice and Jack's hip/leg hit Soderberg's head while he was falling. That wouldn't be a high-sticking penalty if he was hit in the face while going down.

It's not like he's Matt Cooke, he fought guys for a living, he wasn't a cheap shot artist. The NHL is in a no-win spot with DoPS. Either you get an ex-player and people female dog, but can you imagine if they got some bumhole off the street or from the league office do it?

Sure, I get it. Honestly though, what’s the other option there? Wait till soderberg plays the puck and then drill him into the boards? Seriously? Dude was asleep at the wheel, any way you cut it he was going to get plastered there.

That's the way I saw it as well, after reviewing the clip last night of the NHL' s Discipline posted by Richard Keiser.
That said, there are plenty of others who see it as suspendable offense.
Whatever...NHL officiating is a joke and has been since I remember after becaming a Sabres fan in 1971
