Kapanen has played 113 regular season games for the Leafs.

Johnsson has played 69.

I'm guessing a big part is simply that we've seen Kapanen more - we are still forming our opinion on Johnsson.

I'll be someone offer-sheets Kapanen.

- Atomic Wedgie

there was speculation that if a team offered him 4 mill aav, which would amount to a 2nd round pick in compensation, that the leafs wouldn't be able to match. Again, I am not sure what the leafs cap situation will be next year, but I want the Canucks to send that offer to him. Leafs probably will make signing Marner and Johnson (lower AAV than what Kapanen would be) a higher priority than Kapanen

Would you keep one over the other if they cost the same? What if Johnsson cost 1.5mil less? I’d prefer Kappy but if we lost him and resigned Mango that’s fine too.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of.

He's easily worth $3 million - not sure the Leafs have the money for that.

They simply have to get rid of Marleau.

Yeah, I said it.

Tough call.

They are a bit apples to oranges (or mangoes?).

Kappy is two years younger, but that's not really here nor there.

I'm just glad I'm not making the decision.

I agree..

Love the man, but it’s a cut-throat business and I’m sure he understands that. He’s not helping the team anymore, Leafs paid him a ton of money to try for a cup, of it doesn’t work out this year he should get his salary and retire.

I think teams are gonna try to pry Kappy out of Toronto and drive up his price. Is it too early to start planning for the next expansion draft?

After this season, Marleau is 4th on the all-time games played list. 1 more season and he's 2nd. 2 more seasons and he's 1st. Maybe this is a big deal for him...?

Maybe.. Hopefully Arizona or Columbus can help him achieve those milestones.

He'll probably come in at around 40 points this year, so on paper, he hasn't declined too much.

But wow, he doesn't pass the eye test anymore.

I'll keep saying this until training camp next year: they structured his deal so that they could pull some sort of shenanigans after July 1st, 2019.

Gawd, I hope I'm right.

He's got 4 kids (not counting Marner and Matthews).

I'm guessing there are only three options:

1) Toronto
2) San Jose
3) Retirement.

I don't see him going anywhere else.

I think he’ll hang em up after this season. If he sticks with the Leafs he should be on the 4th line, doing pk etc.. I wonder if they’d offer him a player development role? That’s probably something he has in mind for SJ.

3 out of 4 points (or 3 points in 2 games) is 1.5 points a game.

82 x 1.5 = 123

So if they did that, they would play at a 123 point season pace (which is an improvement over the season pace so far)

- senstroll

Yeah, but that's 41 wins and 41 overtime or shootout loses, and that sucks.

Probably true. But retirement doesn't get rid of his cap hit (age 35+ upon signing), if I understand correctly.

For Marleau, not too concerned with reg season.
Im hoping he shines in the playoffs.
I believe if he has a good playoffs, he'll be back with the leafs

He's been playing ok, big body that can skate...he's 1 of the few guys with some weight. I'd almost bet he'll be here next year regardless what people think of his game. Last night the Rielly goal was due to him being heavy and not getting pushed off the puck. JMO

He has old man strength. And he can still skate with the kids, unlike most 40 year olds who can't keep up anymore

I get annoyed though that Marleau gets a free pass because of the leadership excuse. For 6.3 million you have to contribute on the ice. You can get vets for cheaper who can bring leadership.
