Good write up Michael

I thought you made a few really good points.

Eichel needed to shoot, not pass it to the 8th defenseman on the team.

Sometimes the Sabres act like the globetrotters, instead of taking the shot. Mitts was also guilty last night of being a showman.

Erod does this almost every game
.

He missed the net a ton last night

However I thought he played well

I like erod, fun to watch and he played well last night.

He needs to simplify his game a bit though.

Seems like he tries to make 1 too many passes or bad choice of passes often.

It’s not appealing to stare down the barrel of another rebuild non playoff year. Let’s build on the momentum, positives that will be the story of the 18/19 season

Dahlin is as good as we hoped, needs some work but he’s friggin 18

Eichel is a stud, coulda won the game single handed last night. He will only get better.

Skinner is needed long term. He has a ton of heart and clearly loves playing here more than most do. Why the fack would anyone want to dump a 40 goal scorer who plays with heart?

Mitts is showing some real promise. Gets more confident every day.

Montour was a good signing

Ullmark needs a true #1 ahead of him as he grows but all in all he has been better overall than I expected. Especially considering who is playing in front of him.

Samson is showing why he was a
Leader in Jrs and on the world stage.

If everyone wants Risto gone, that will be easy to accomplish and should command a handsome return.

We have 2 first round picks this year

UFA market is the best in 20 years

If I'm Botteril, here's my offseason moves:

1. Sign Skinner

2. Try to get out from under the cap hits of any/all of the following players: Okposo, Hunwick, Scandella, Sobotka. I'd try to target Ottawa here because they are going to have to put some salary on the books just to reach the cap floor next year.

3. Look to trade Risto for some offensive help. I still think other GM's see a lot of value in him and I think he could net a top 6 forward. Swing back around to Tampa Bay in the offseason, especially if they win the cup. It sure feels like one of their $5 million per guys might be available if Point isn't.

4. Look in either the UFA or trade market for a solid, experienced NHL defensemen to add to the roster. Two if you can. Maybe Adam McQuaid or a guy like Carl Gunnarsson.

5. Pick up one of the decent UFA forwards that will be out on the market: Johansson, Ferland, Brassard, Dzingel, Simmonds, Lee, Nyquist, Hayes. We may have to overpay a little, but target them early and go right after them.

6. Fire Housley. I can't stand the idea of starting over with a new coach, but it's just not working. Murray and Bylsma got fired because we only got 81pts coming off the tank year. Two years later, if we play .500 hockey the rest of the season (which we have not been able to do for the past 3 months), we will finish with 82pts.

I don't know if these moves will get us into the playoffs, but it might stop the bleeding.

I second this ! Great post. Ideally Skinner comes in at or less then $8.5M is the only thing I’d add.

Travis Yost interview was good, as usual on WGR.

Our goalies have given up 18 goals more than expected since win streak ended. Basically the worst goaltending in the league.

I’m inclined to just say we are average with bad goaltending, and things aren’t as bad as they seem.

Just get Skinner signed, try to get a couple decent FA’s like Johansson or Hayes, and continue to build the pipeline

I think it's really hard to go there without adding that we have major team wide defensive issues.

blame this way more than I blame Ullmark... Hutton on the other hand...

PS and it not just the defense, if the forwards aren't doing their job the defense doesn't have someplace to go with the puck even when they get possession.

i tried to make that clear by saying team-wide

Hutton and Ullmark have both been less than average for 4 months. I'm not confident in either long term.

side note

bogo is worse in the last 4 months
risto is worse in the last 4 months
scandella has been brutal the last 4 months
mccabe regressed the last 4 months

and when lehner got to a better team he went from one of the worst goalies to one of the best in 6 short months

fix the d and the goalies are much better IMO

I don't think he'll be ready. He'll need some time in Rochester. It could be crowded in goal there next year with Johansson, Wilcox, 6K and maybe Wedgewood although the Sabres might not give him a qualifying offer. If 6K's season ends early, I'd like to see him play a few games in Cincinnati.

What are the other choices?

Rochester maybe?

Other goalies/players have come into the nhl at his age

Wonder what the management is thinking?

Maybe move ullmark if 6k is ready?

You guys are good at changing the topic. If you want to broaden it, then the only the only thing this team does above average is kill penalties.

That seems pretty ambitious. Do you think Hutton gets moved on the offseason and we look to upgrade ? Could Jimmy Howard be any worse ?
