As for leauge leaders, Marner is currently sitting at 8th or 9th? Matthews was 1st earlier in the year until his injury that caused him to miss 14 games (although it's unlikely he'd have kept up his original pace all year), Tavares is also in the top 20 and 4th in goals.

If I was a caps fan, I'd probably say OV, Backstrom, and Carlson were fairly equal to Crosby, Malkin, and Letang. Has Backstrom ever won any individual awards? Carlson? Who cares, they are fairly close. Close enough they were also able to win a cup.

The Caps won once after how many years? Ovechkin, as an individual, might be equal to another individual but the teams, not equal. Pittsburgh always owned them, always won more.

And Ovechkin might be the greatest goal scorer of all-time. That goes a long way especially when he goes beast mode in the playoffs.

When it comes down to something like the playoffs and winning championships, those small differences could determine who wins and who doesn't. Look how many times Pittsburgh and Washington went head to head and Pittsburgh always won (until last year). You could say it was splitting hairs and they were equal but clearly one team won more than the other. Teams like San Jose came "close" but LA and Chicago were better. Might have been by a small margin but that's what the difference was.

Also, Willy at his new cap hit of 6.9m will look like a brilliant move by late next season.

I don't think it's that crazy a statement anyways. Would our stars be equal to the Pens stars in their heyday? Maybe not, but they're pretty close to them these days. And even when they were young and at their best, it's not that outrageous. Who is to say throughout their careers in the next few years Marner or Matthews or even Tavares don't win any individual awards like Richard or Art Ross? Matthews was looking like a strong contender for the Richard before he got hurt...
