Yes. He is.

Meh. I don’t think he’s better enough to part with what it would likely take to get him.

That is a different issue. Thought you were just asking if he is better than Gustafsson in relation to salaries. Say Gustafsson puts up the same kind of numbers next season and the answer is different.

Would be ideal if Stan could sign Gus to a 3yr extension for $2.5-$3mil. I just think there are plenty of guys who can pass the puck to Kane/Cat and get their point shot on net, including Jokiharju and Boquist who are on Entry Deals and have been Running Powerplays every level of their career.

Gus is putting up numbers that are the equal or better than the top offensive type D-men in the league. I go back and forth on him. From the red line in he is very good.
Its the other side of the ice that is an adventure. He has stretches where he shows he can play defense but then his mind wanders or something leading to some bad decisions.

Maybe I’m biased as a Kane fanatic, but I attribute much of Gus’ point production to the excellence of Kane and Cat as 2 of the most lethal finishers in the league.

Extended media scrum with JC today re: goalie situation, his own experience so far, locker room dynamics, etc. ETA: he IS asked directly to explain the D system

The Hawks can’t come back with the same defense next season, Stan has to find a way to upgrade the D.

Assuming Keith and Seabrook return then rest of the group is uncertain. Also, assuming none of the prospect are NHL ready (which is reasonable and likely) the Hawks will need to be active in free agency and/or trades. Maybe Gus stays one more season, but I would be relunctant to sign him to a long term big money deal at age 28, even after back to back 50 point seasons. Offense isn’t the major concern, the team needs a Hjalmarsson circa 2013 type more than the current Gustafsson.

the hawks playoff express is derailed.

1/19: 10 pts out of WC spot and last in the nhl; 10-4 record since and now 6 pts out with 4 teams to pass...a net gain of 4 pts..ugh

19 games left and the final four all divisional playoff teams

so they need another big streak and finish and the teams in front to start slumping: do they have another 11-4-4 type finish in them?

even if they keep scoring at the plus 4 Goals/game, i doubt it.

enjoy the kane and cat show and hope craw shows he can still play...thats all this season is now about

The purpose of the remainder of this season is to determine who should stay and in what capacity. At most one of Forsling, Koekkoek and Dahlstrom should return.

Kane might really regret working so hard with this kid on his offensive skills

https://twitter.com/Arizo...tatus/1100622204121669632

P.S. Since I don't think we really did anything with that saved Hossa money, might have been nice to have him around just a bit longer. Think this is the 2nd SO he's won for them, at least.

My point was in comparison to Hamilton, DK. I wouldn't want Gustafsson signed long term either. Hamilton has put up solid numbers over more than one season. For all we know, Gustafsson could be having his one magical season.

Have to think long term in regards to Hossa's money. They also got Entwhistle in the deal who is having a good season in juniors. It also gives them more flexibility moving forward.

Vinny has always had that skill, tho. I watched him a lot when he was at Notre Dame and he was electric every time he was on the ice. He just needs to find his niche and be more consistent in all aspects.

I root for Vinny. He is a good kid.

Gotcha, fair point. With that being said we can expect Stan to re-sign Gus after one good season to an 8 year $7 million AAV deal with a full NMC.

For me it’s about this upcoming season with regards to using Hossa’s cap space. This summer they should be spending to the cap again.

I’m not sure what to make of Entwistle and for that matter Hagel. If I had to make a prediction I’d go with AHL fodder for both of them.

Hagel is an over-ager but he had a 5-points game tonight - 2g/3a. Not bad.

Haven't seen much of either of the two mentioned. I did like what little I saw of Entwhistle at the WJC. For whatever that is worth.

Hagel, I have no clue. He is having one monster season just from looking at his production. Beware the over-ager, though.

While there are others you listed whom surely could run a powerplay, a big maybe with Gus he is the best at it. To say categirically any of them is the better one though is beside the point next sesson since Boqvist is not likely going to be letting it rip playing here.

Furthermore you come away feeling. each would be very good in the role. Ssying whom is better at certain skills on the Pp is not ascertainable right now.....but Gus we have seen has the shot and smarts.

Agreed, my main point being that he’s signed next year at a good price. If Jokiharju and/or Boquist make the jump and show flashes on PP2, maybe Gus is a high value trade deadline asset. Maybe Stan doubles his salary this summer to lock him up for $3mil? Lots of good options to have offensively from the defense group. But the d-zone play needs to improve whether it’s personnell, strategy, effort, or all of the above. Given the cap commitments already (& coming to Cat + Strome), not sure Eric Gustafson at a cap hit over $4mil is a luxury Stanley Bowman can afford...
