Yeah, let's wait until OJ actually becomes worth losing sleep over before working about his exempt status.
- Nucker101

Exactly, because that may never happen. I don’t really worry too much about the subduction zone out there, but I do have an earthquake kit.

It’s a non issue. We’re gonna lose someone. If he’s one of our top three dmen in two years then protect him, if not, it’s not an issue.

Just trade him if you’re that worried about him. Edler, Erik Karlsson and Quinn Hughes’s will be our top three anyways

I'm sure Edler wants the NMC so he can't be traded out of town but also because he doesn't like the prospect of being claimed in the expansion draft. Good reason to keep his extension to 2 years with a NMC. He wouldn't be picked if he's not under contract and they can renegotiate a new extension 2 years down the road if that's in everyone's best interests. Pay him more cash now to offset the shorter term if need be, but don't burn one of the exemption spots.

I hope this is the case, good point

This is from a keith Grezky interview

SN: Do you have last say on trades?

KG: I talk to Bob (CEO Nicholson) and we feel like (we know) what’s best. We made the trade with Cam (Talbot). I went to Bob and said, ‘OK, here’s the team, and this is what we can get.’ It really helped us out. With Sam (Gagner), we’d been talking about Sam for a long time. There was a little hiccup before because of salary — we couldn’t budge from what (Vancouver) wanted, and they wouldn’t budge — but when we were able to move Cam that opened up some room.

Looks like Benning wouldn't retain salary on Gagner and he out waited the Oilers. This tidbit makes me feel that Benning is a little more savvy then some on here would give him credit for.

Nope. Shouldnt have ever signed gagner. Let alone be happy getting spooner. Sorry bro. Every gm makes mistakes and gives out bad contracts but ours does it every year and never learns his listen.

I wish Gillis was still here. He did awesome. Whether you liked him or hated him he got results. His downfall was he shoulda wiped out the scouting crew. We are very quickly approaching a decade of losing crap hockey. If Benning misses the playoffs next year for the love of goodness get rid of him. We have nothing. We have 2 above average players in bo and brock. 1 superstar in ep an average goalie and a potential top 4 dman in Hughes after like 6 years. Not good enough sorry

If it was tkachuk over juolevi and ehlers or nylander over jake it's an entirely different story cause we could move a young forward for a dman

Gillis sucked , he hardballed the twins when he could have had them cheaper, and if Sundin would have taken the 20 mil that Gillis offered we would have been screwed Sundin and his agent saved us there , and oh yeah making a fragile goalie your captain and then signing him to a brutal contract that can still haunt the team. Gillis was a lot like Burke in Anaheim he came into a plumb spot with solid character players and almost won

player development is not a guarantee , Tkachuk here could develop differently , JV elsewhere could be a different player all together. we needed D period and Joulevi was the consensus top D in our spot.

Giles was good for a few years but.... he fraked the team hard.
Making a bad signing isn't smart.
Refusing to retain salary until the other guy caved and accepts your terms is smart.

Didnt like him as a person interview wise. Every GM does good and bad things. Would he be my first choice? No. Did he get results? Yes. Burke players Nonis players and Gillis players on a team where Gillis and Gilman were about to navigate the cap and add pieces to the tune of 2 presidents trophies. You can argue as much you want to against him but it was the best era of vancouver hockey ever. Now if and obviously it didnt happen but if we won game 7 I dont think there is anyway any canuck fan can possible say he wasn't the greatest GM we ever had. We didnt so we can debate away but he was 1 win away. That's all I'm saying is he was way better then the garbage we have now

That's not all you're saying.

I posted an interview with grezky talking about Benning playing hardball and how his savvy was underrated.
In response you wrote an essay about how Benning sucks and Gilles was looking damn fine.

you should ask Benning this lol

I feel like older players care more about these clauses than younger players do.

- Codes1087

Since you aren’t eligible for a NTC until you are eligible to be a UFA, is it any wonder that “older” players get them and “younger” players don’t?

Also, hey, how you doing?

Anyone on the Island going to (went to) see the Giants and BB against the Royals this weekend?
