Thought they paid a bit too much with the trade but this is a solid contract
- Nucker101

Will Edler sign for that?

If I’m his agent, I don’t agree to anything until after the TDL

If Hughes gets top PP1 I doubt Edler get close to 35
- VANTEL

I'd rather they use him as a shutdown guy than a first unit PP guy.

No. But the guy was right about Schneider, bieska and AV.

Agreed

People still envision him as the 50 pt guy from 2011 . They forget that he is in a contract year showing off his skills and still missing a lot of time and point production falling off.

I really hope it is only two year extension

Why would they do that, seriously, I know Benning's an idiot but they won't play him more than nine games. If they did, he should be fired on the spot. There's zero point in playing him ten or more games.

His ELC will be up so he will need to be protected
- Retinalz

Actually his ELC will still be in effect in June of 2021.

* One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2021-22 and b) played in at least 40 NHL games the prior season or played in at least 70 NHL games in the prior two seasons.

Also, he's not under contract yet for 2021/22.

I'd love a 1 x 6 mill contract for him. Realistically though, I can see him getting a 2 x 6 or 5.5 aav contract.

Benning was asked directly during an interview a while back about this situation and he said it would not concern him if they burned away Hughes' protection this year.

From Feb 1st:
Is Jim Benning concerned about Hughes and the expansion draft?

“No. I’m not worried about that,” said Benning.

“I don’t think that we have a worry on defence with protection problems in that expansion draft,” he said. “We want to get him going and see where he’s at and that will give him experience going into next year too.”

I could as well. I expect 3+ years, with a higher AAV ($5-5.5?), NMC

GMJB calls him “their best defenceman”, they are going to pay him like he is.

I seriously doubt the management group feels the same way, yet another example of why Benning is bottom three GM's in the league. I'd be shocked and dismayed if they allow him to play ten games.

From March 9th to the end of the year there's 14 games, he'll play nine of them.

I agree I don't expect him to play over 9. I was genuinely surprised to hear JB say it though, perhaps it's something he felt he needed to say in terms of placating the player while they're still unsigned

Edler wont be getting a decrease in his aav. I think it's safe he wont see less than 5 mill aav on no matter what term he is signed to.

Agree, he won't make less than his current 5 million a year, 5.333 over three years maybe.

Worst case scenario is we sign him to 3 years and give him protection. Bieksa was signed and protected and it forced the ducks to expose Theodore (I believe). Edler shouldnt be needing protecting when Seattle has its draft imo.
