Pettersson was a highly regarded prospect anyway, it's not like they picked some guy ranked to go in the 5th round that high. Pettersson is a really skilled player and at the time had more question marks than others. He made the most of his situation and looks damn good, but it's only been one season so far. Plus Nico and Nolan both have 1 more year in the NHL. If Pettersson was their number 1 pick the whole time he would of came over last year.

I'm not trying to knock Pettersson, like I said he is highly skilled, but he is as frail as a soggy paper bag. He hasn't even played a full season and has been injured 3 times already. Let's at least see how he holds up over a few more years before anyone starts calling him the best player in the draft.

Agreed, it is way too soon to guess at a mock redraft.

So Washington just acquired Hagelin from LA for a 3rd and a 6th. What is Stone and Duchene going to cost to acquire? Simmonds fits somewhere in the middle of that.
- MJL

Simmonds probably gets you something closer to coyle but better. So either a first round pick plus a b prospect or maybe like an B+ prospect and a second?

Yuck, other than being a decent skater that is a lot to give up. Raffl could AT LEAST get a 3rd. Simmonds I still say a 2nd and a non-top prospect/depth roster player.

Hagelin is a good role player and adds speed on the forecheck, solid defense and penalty killing for a team. For a team looking to win the Cup again, it's not really that much.

Simmonds would have more points if his center was creating more plays and setting him up better. It's a two way street.
- MJL

That being said...It would also help if the defense could get pucks on net....which....they do not.

Raffl probably gets you a 4th at this point. Simmonds a 1st or a good prospect plus a 2nd.

Nope. Not really having a good year only 8 pts

Edit: 4-4-8 in 54 games played. Not really sure why anyone would pick him up

Smith-Pelly’s career high is 17 points and he had 16 points last season. What were the caps expecting? He’s a bottom six grinder.

No idea but it was a dumb contract. I was more surprised at your shock to him clearing through waivers

Ek's latest update:

Hearing Tampa and the Flyers are talking a deal that could send Wayne to Lightning and return Boris Katchouk, who is a linemate of Flyers prospect Morgan Frost, and possibly a draft pick...

Thoughts?

Would prefer raddysh or Foote but this would be fine depending on the pick

Edit: Katchouk struggling in the AHL a little this year. Would def be trying to get raddysh but Tampa probs doesn't want to give him up

Like it.... I think for a while he and Frost were 1 and 2 in scoring. I would still like something else, tho

Intriguing. He stood out for me at the last WJC, but he isn't too productive in the AHL as of yet.

I would think there would have to be something else coming as well in terms of a high round pick.

I like his size and he skates pretty well.

1) Flyers top nine is fine, although they could use another second-line caliber center so that they can move Giroux back to LW again while still keeping Patrick in favorable matchups.

2) Yes, Gudas has been the most consistent and has had a good year. Doesn't make him the BEST defenseman on the team, just the one who has hit the fewest bumps in road/ slumps this year. Provorov is still the team's best D. Sanheim is fast-rising. Ghost has had a rough season (and 2nd season) but was excellent his rookie and 3rd years. Hägg is fairly solid in his role, just so long as he's not overextended.

3) "Can use an infusion of young talent." ... Patrick, Konecny, Provorov, Lindblom, Sanheim, Hart, now Myers in the NHL. All talented, all young. Morgan Frost on the way next season. Perhaps Joel Farabee the year after that. Isaac Ratcliffe has a decent shot at being developed into a good NHL winger.

4) "Whiffed on Pettersson." First of all, do you know have many teams would have taken Pettersson if they had the 2nd overall pick in the 2017 draft? The answer is zero, including Vancouver. It was a two-horse race between Hischier and Patrick for the top spot with Heiskanen a dark horse. You can't come back a couple years later and retro-draft what you "should" have done with the pick, when no team would have done so at the time.

Secondly, Nolan Patrick is coming along fine. He's been one of the Flyers best players in the second half of the season thus far, and not just because he's now scoring with some regularity. He's developing a good 200-foot game. He doesn't have elite speed but he has a lot of skill, good hockey sense, is big and strong and is improving his quickness. He's going to be a very good player in the league for a long time.

Lastly, when teams draft 18-year-olds, one of the factors they look at beyond sheer offensive upside is how much developmental guesswork is involved from draft year to draft-plus-one to draft-plus-two. Patrick was projectable as immediately NHL ready as a top 9 with a "safe" top 6 upside within a couple years and potential first-line upside by the time he's 23 or 24. You know what you call a player with such projections? The first or second pick of the draft.

Pettersson is obviously a special talent, too. Hence, him being the fifth overall pick in the draft, and the third forward off the board. If he had been projected as being ready to step right into the NHL a year ago, as Hischier and Patrick were, he might well have been a first or second overall pick. If his immediate impact this season, which has outpaced Patrick or Hischier, had been knowable, the Devils or Flyers would have waited the extra year for his arrival. However, that's all hindsight.

The reality at the time: since there was just a shade more guesswork about his NHL ETA and timetable to be an impact player -- which has been very quick, as it turned out -- he was the third forward and fifth pick overall.

The Stars, who picked third overall, were thrilled to get Heiskanen in that spot. For good reason, too, as he looks like a future No. 1 defenseman. Colorado took Makar fourth..... plenty of upside but not yet in the NHL.

Bill, the biggest point I take from this is the draft age needs to be bumped up. I’d prefer to go to 20 what say you?

I'd take it assuming the pick was a 2nd. Seems to have decent size at 6' 2" and 188. If he can add scoring on the wing, great. Seems like Frost getting here 19-20, followed by Farabee year after and then, hopefully, Ratcliff in 21-22 (or vice versa). Has his one season in AHL this year.
