Another problem this discussion has ignored. Drafting.

Tampa, outside of their 1st round picks:

Palat, Johnson, Point, Kucherov, Killorn, Gourde, all impact non 1st rounders.

What do the Sabres have whom they drafted or signed as a UDFA?

Pommer with 24 points. Erod with 21. Complimentary. People want to understand why we suck? We suck because we can't find talent outside the 1st round.

I'm eager to see Botterill's non-first rounders (hopefully) come to fruition.

- TheSabresTaco

I preach this all the time, as nauseum for some on here, I would think.

Draft. Develop.

Rochester seems to have turned around. Hopefully this reflects on the guys they draft and promote

Well, some of that is true. Kane and ROR produced, but were both somewhat damaged goods. Scandella and Pommer cost $9.75 for...30 goals total? Sheary and Hunwick cost $5.75 for 10 goals? Freaking Tage, Slobotka and Bergy cost $7m for 8 goals? That is the state of the Sabres, and Botts brought it in.
He doesn't get a pass for it. It is right to crtique him for it.
He shipped out poop and brought in a whole lot of expensive poop.

- IonSabres

I'm not saying he's perfect, and he brought in short term, high salary, that frankly this team could certainly afford. The org didn't want Kane, and ROR was a unique scenario with clearly low demand. But he needed to fill in the lineup with what was a very clear lack of depth. He brought in what he could, when he could. I'm not saying the players he got were excellent, but he's so far tried to fill in the roster, keeping in mind the short AND long term ramifications. It's hard to fill in a roster with very little spendable assets.

Asking a 3rd line WINGER to be the 2nd line CENTER was a stupid freaking idea
*someone should’ve told Botts about the Ville Leino signing & how that same scenario was an utter disaster

Idk if his hands were tied or not,
but as i said when the trade happened...
We should NOT have taken back Berglund or Sobatka

All u clowns who argued with me about it can eat sh!t
I freaking told u guys

- jdfitz77

there's always 6'5" Tage cream puff Thompson and his .22 pts per game and the 1st round pick to SAVE the day.

- TheSabresTaco

Maybe
I got A LOT of crap for calling them Cap dumps & saying the trade sucked bc we took them back as part of it

“But they’ll help our depth”
Yeah... right...

Just take my post as unleashing some frustration
Everybody else cries & whines like little b!tches on here too
Guess it was my turn

Hire the Tampa director of pro player development as the assistant gm.
- ImThatGuy

We (frank)ing should. But, and I love this phrase, To Be Fair, the jury is out on Bott's post-1st rounders.

Absolutely true
Even if Kane & ROR absolutely HAD TO GO
What he brought in to replace them (besides Skinner) has been a disaster

Botterill has traded for 11 players in non ahl only trades. Only Skinner was a positive impact player. And he may only be here for one year.

No one has drafted like Tampa though
Stevie Y is a freaking wizard

- jdfitz77

If there is a strong part of Botts it is his amatuer scouting staff...look at his 2 drafts...still VERY early but holy cow he appears to gave hit on most of them.
Trades are his weakness..his proplayer staff has some work to do...alot of work to do...and he needs to just plain stop taking bad contracts on and now needs to find away to getvrid of a few this offseason.

Or just someone who used common sense to think a 3rd line winger playing 2C was a bad idea
Don’t think i had to be Stevie Y to be able to see what a bad idea that was

So far...
but we’ve liked A LOT of guys in the years after they were drafted who turned out to not help us at this level

Way too soon to say if he’s a good draft/develop GM or not

We got a good one! Be patient. Harrington has been on fire lately. I don't think the genius makes it through the post TDL presser without breathing into a brown paper bag.
