Serious question is there any contract you would be happy if the Rangers extended Hayes? With in reason - mdw7413
No. Because at what point are we done waiting for him to be a real number one center. He's a good player, but probably won't ever be great. |

Well if Zib is the #1, Hayes would be the number 2 |

Zib probably isn't a number one center either. But The Rangers would probably have to pay Hayes more. The cap hit % would probably be similar in terms of when the deal signed |

It would probably be my preference that they do extend him at a reasonable rate, unless some team gives up the farm. - Pete V
I’ve been fighting it also, to keep or trade him. On one hand you don’t wanna over pay him specifically on the other hand eventually you’d have overpay someone else most likely. And does that player do as much as Hayes does. I feel like guys like Tom wanna trade him to say hey we made more trades for picks or prospects. Hayes isn’t old, he doesn’t suck at all and he’s a center. You need all that for a rebuilding team
Like if all they get is a first and a decent prospect I don’t think it’s a very good move, because the first will be later most likely and can you guarantee the same production or player Hayes is giving by picking there? Hell no you can’t. And I’m not the biggest fan of Hayes out there, it’s just a logic thing with me. Eventually we trade everyone but the kitchen sink and have a bunch of draft picks they may or may not amount to much of anything. I don’t have much confidence in the scouts like some mention so I’d prefer a really good nhl ready prospect if I had to pick the return for Hayes |

I think we have bigger concerns at wing, D and bottom 6 than what Hayes has to offer. I think Hayes as a 2C is actually solid, especially if Zib can continue his great play. The difference right now is the lack of having that stud(s) to go with a guy like Hayes, and even Zib.
All that said, I think we should trade him for the right package. A first and a 1b prospect would be sufficient for me. Has to be a multiplayer deal though. Trade one good asset for the possibility of two good assets. |

So if they signed Hayes for 5x6 with a limited NTC in the 1st say 3 years and nothing after, you would have an issue? |

I look at Zib as a low end 1C. Not elite by any means but he is producing better then a #2 |

On the flip side to this though, they could draft a stud with the pick they get for trading Hayes...
The Rangers have a great supporting cast. If they had a one/two punch of Stammer and Kuch or something like that, I actually think they would be a strong team. But the defense would ultimately kill any cup possibilities |

The centers aren't fine. You need a number 1 center. You have to have it. Zib and Hayes are good. They are number 1 centers. |

For arguments sake, zucc is traded and resigned, and re-signing Hayes
Top two lines are
KZZ
Krav-Hayes-Chytil
That is a pretty good top 6. I think it’s risky to assume Chytil is a guaranteed center and not a winger. Hopefully a much more productive and consistent J.T. Miller, which would be terrific if he turned out that way. Obviously I’m banking on Kravtsov being a stud also
That’s all without signing Panarin or someone else, possibly. And then Karlsson and you really have a quality team imo
I don’t think they are as far off from contending as most think, thus my feeling on what do with Hayes |

Honestly, we hope Chytil becomes that stud. I do know that with Zib and Hayes, the team is pretty decent down the middle. You hope will all the defensive prospects we added, a few of them help shape the next good core. Even for teams that draft well and pick high, it's hard to duplicate Stammer and Kuch. You have to either get incredibly lucky (Pittsburgh) or you need to snag a key UFA at the right time (Toronto). A much more realistic scenario would be to duplicate when the Sharks had THornton and Pavelski in their primes and even that is not a given.

I agree Zib needs to back this year up next year. If he does though, he is clearly a #1 center. |

Zib's pretty close right now, IMO.
But he's 26. You'll get 3 or 4 more years of him being a 60+ point player and then he'll likely start falling away |
