If you guys want to change the D and you are resigning Edler and coming back.with Tanev Stechet and Hutton, wouldn't that be tweaking the bottom pairing?

Tweaking the top two pairs, and blowing up the bottom 4.

the entire D pairings I think will change with Hughes playing, which will push someone out of the top 4 currently, which will evidently make our bottom pair better.

I think we could see:

Edler - Stecher
Hughes - Tanev
Gudbranson - Hutton
Biega

Is this enough change? no I don't think so. I think trading Gudbranson now and using a replacement via free agency/trade/Utica (Sautner in particular) would be the best route to go.

Edler Karlsson
Hughes tanev
Hutton stecher
OJ Gudbranson

Trade gudbranson for a 7th in 2020, he's always been useless. Playoffs?

change should be gradual and allow the d to develop. trying to fix it in one offseason or season is ludicrous.

this is not the time to try to fix major problems through free agency or trades (acquiring a big name player). it usually costs too much.

sign guys who will accept short terms. in this respect, edler is a good candidate as long as he accepts 1 year deals and allows himself to be traded at the tdl (if the team so decides). let him know that another 1 year deal would be available again in the offseason so his family doesn't have to move.

It doesn't seem a lot different than what we have now? I imagine Hutton and Edler will come in around 10 mil for the next 3-4 years. Is that what you want to do with the cap space?

im ok with slow and gradual. When I meant, "is it enough", I meant to turn this franchise around and start competing. We all know that Hughes isn't going to magically turn our entire D corps into something more than it is, it will take more, but I agree, it won't be something that is changed in a season.

Then this time next year we will probably be having the same talks.

I really would like to see a trade for a 2RHD and not a Spooner for Gagner quality trade

Edler 5m x 2 ntc Expires at the deadline 2021

Hutton 3m x 3 years

Karlsson 11m x 7 modified ntc , after 5 years , 15 teams he can't be traded to. Front loaded with bonuses so that we could buy him out or trade him after year 5.

Trade Sutter and gudbranson for bags of pucks to clear some cap space, pay the equipment by to rub fiberglass particles on the inside of ericsson's jock so he'll develop an allergy.

Playoffs

the focus shouldn't be on constructing a team that can challenge for the playoffs next season.

the focus should be on constructing a team that can compete for the cup. this is several years away.

Has Pettersson magically turned the forward group into something more than it is?

While Gudbranson doesnt have as much as value as what JB paid, youd get more than a 7th or a bag of pucks.

I suspect that he's gone in the offseason if JB can sign another RHD.

I mean, if youre going to keep Edler, Tanev, Hutton and Stecher, slot hughes and Juolevi in.....something has to give. Gudbranson cannot be a $5 mill #7 for a poopty team....

i am as high on Hughes as anybody else, but I don't think I could confidently say that I put that much stock into his rookie season as you do. I think he will be great for us, will probably have somewhat sheltered minutes, and will do some things this fan base has not seen from a defense man in a long long time, but i don't think his impact will be of the same significance as what Peter has been.

True but if a 7th is the only offer you take it and run. Same with Sutter.

Drama happens organically, no need to fabricate it.

Potential topics:

Gaunce - a decent bottom 6 player
Gudbranson - toughness warrants a spot in the lineup
Sutter - a foundational leader and valuable middle 6 forward
Beagle - see Sutter above
Markstrom - a true #1 goalie
Benning - evil genius or mentally challenged farm hand.

Post of the year right here.

I don't know if it will be that dramatic of a shift. We still need physicality from the back end and if we get rid of Gudbranson, (which at this point I think we all agree we should) you need someone to be throwing some hits and clearing the front of the net, Edler can't be our most physical Dman

Edler - Tanev
Hutton - ???
Hughes - Stecher

Sautner/Brisebois/Juolevi

Gotta fill that empty slot and I just don't see any players out there who fit the bill.

I think that if he does anything close to what Heiskanen has done this season, you better have rubber underwear youll be poopting yourself so much......

Lets add Mathew Boldy this season (for poops and giggles thats who Ill say they pick), by the 2020-21 season this team might just put a scare into some contenders.

My 2020-21 team.....for fun and I like to take a pounding

Dahlen/Pettersson/Boeser
Boldy/Horvat/MacEwen
Leivo/Gaudette/Virtanen
Roussel/Beagle/Motte
Eriksson

Hughes/Stecher
Edler/Tanev
Hutton/Woo
Juolevi

Fair amount of optimism there - Maybe Eriksson gets bought out, maybe the Canucks find a different RHD to add....lots of things can happen but it'll be a young team entering its prime with some legit talent there to work with....
