I am not worried about the TOI at the moment, its probably not bad to hold them back now. Also, Auston went beast mode on couple late shifts and scored the tying goal. roll the lines and reserve some of that energy when needed - senstroll
But Babs is killing the older vets. He doesn't hold back everyone. He's inconsistent with that message.
He seems worried about tiring-out a 21 year-old and killing a 39 year-old. |

but Matthews get more TOI per game than Marleau, 5v5 and all sit.

I do agree that we have good depth, and it does affect players on Tampa as well. The issue is, this has simply always been Babcock's way of coaching. He did this last year with no Tavares.
He's playing Hyman and Marleau far too much. That does not have anything to do with depth. - RogerRoeper
I don't know, Babs changes it up as he goes...hopefully he has everything ticking at game 82 and we get it rolling. Last year he stopped playing guys that were failing and I don't see why he wont this year. I don't want Matthews on the PK...I don't think it would be that much more beneficial for the team or him. ( that's about the only way to get him more ice )
Anyways I ride you about your opinion but I get the frustration.... |

Marleau does play way too much. But Hainsey is a better example. His minutes are ridiculous. |

I think the ice time debate has to be flavoured a little with a face-off winning percentage in game viewpoint. I haven't looked at the stats ... but the eyetest tells me that Matthews wasn't particularly good at St.Louis, and that may flavor how the "gud pro Mike" selects who's getting ice-time.
that would be an in-game adjustment obviously
- BorjeFan4Ever
I thought he looked good most of the game, but he had a lazy backcheck on the 1st goal; granted he was coming from behind the red line if I recall correctly.
I think the reason Babcock started with the Tavares line in OT is that 3-on-3 is a possession game, and Tavares was 11-8 in the face off circle, while Matthews was 11-13. |

4-1 Marlies. - GreatGigInTheSky
is there a website that gives a live gamecenter type feed... I'm curious, with the Mariles only haven given up 1 goal so far...
i) who are they playing
ii) who's in net
iii) are the twins Swedes back from injury
iv) who else is playing on the defense
etc. |

I think he'd be an upgrade on Lindholm/Brown.. Maybe pick up DSP and then trade Brown for a D-man - PatC80
Brown looked good last night ( I havent said this often enough this year though ) |

in OT ... the faceoff is ultra impactful... particularly for the Leafs... its all possession based.... if Tavares was reasonably successful against ORielly in game... he'd obviously go with him to start in OT.
let's face ... last the night the Leafs got "Bozak'd" |

well thats a different story. i think only thing you can do it take Hainsey away from Babs.
If the Leafs fizzle again in the 1st round, does Dubas move on from Babs? Its crazy to think. But man, he seems pretty stubborn about some things
At the moment the options are pretty weak on the right side, so Hainsey it is |

They'll be in better shape with the D with what they have on the Marlies. |

So we are going to hurt the entire team with a message? That makes no sense. - RogerRoeper
I would argue that, at this stage of the season, "Sending a message" makes perfect sense.
I also don't mind keeping Matthews' ice time down... but this year he better be rested and ready to bring it in the playoffs.

I would have been ok with it last season, we were locked in 3rd. This season it's tougher. We went from 2nd overall to 3rd in our division with no home ice advantage within 48 hours following a loss last week. |

I'm a big Muzzin fan, but he was giving away freebies like crazy in the 1st last night....and a couple games previous....I can see why Babs has switched the d pairings around like he has. Babs won't be going anywhere...I'd guess we don't resign Hainsey if he doesn't like his ice time. |

Like that lineup a lot. The only thing i'd do is switch Marleau and Johnsson because JT and Marner don't really use the 3rd forward. Johnsson actually plays a lot better in the bottom six. He can succeed there. I find when he's on one of the top 2 lines, he looks a little lost at times. - walshyleafsfan
Thats a good thought. I just thought that Kadri with Marleau/Kapanen could act as a decent shutdown line for the playoffs as they are all good defensively.

Leafs have a deep team, Matthews is tied for 22nd for 5v5 ice time...tied with Eichel
Matthews 14:42 avg toi/game
Marner 14:52
Tavares 15:13
6th place goes to Crosby at 15:54 - around 20 secs/period more then Auston.
edit; players listed as C's - Garnie
Crosby who's 10 years older than Matthews gets more ice time.
