I'm afraid we're not getting rid of Marleau.

We should be focusing on trading Zaitsev. Getting rid of that albatross of a contract would solve A LOT of problems. - mjones242
Agree with this, if Dubas can fish-in....... errr I mean ..... negotiate a trade to move Zaitsev many issues would go away. Unfortunately, unless Liljegren is deemed ready for prime time, there is not a single RHD in the system that could be moved to the big club at the moment.

yeah Johnsson is 24, similar story to undrafted Tyler Johnson on Tampa. Not exactly like but not far off, numbers of 22-23 year old 3 rd round pick Brad Marchand. Truth is we don't know what Johnsson will turn out to be - looks pretty good right now. (frank) Lindholm - don't see any reason he is on the team. - winsix
Again, I am not trying to bring him down.
But people are acting like they cant trade him for a 2ND pair D...It is ridiculous.

I agree with this. If you look at the Canes lineup, Johnsson would fit in as a 3rd line RW replacing McGuinn. From that standpoint, Canes would be looking for Johnsson plus at the very least imo. for Pesce. I don't think Leafs can make a move for another d-man without unloading Zaitsev first, and realistically it would be Zaitsev plus for a bag of pucks.

Agree - they seem to always play sh!t against Arizona - hard to explain, Arizona has been a garbage team since inception.

I'm thinking Zaitsev gets moved in the off-season and if Liljegren doesn't immediately step in perhaps Holl gets a chance?
I'm wondering what the plans are for Hainsey. Do the Leafs bring him back for a year? I certainly hope not - there has got to be better options on the right side... but then again, it's a grand canyon size hole we're looking at.
Assuming Gardiner is not returning we're looking at:
Rielly-?
Muzzin-?
Rosen-?
RHD options:
Hainsey (re-sign? sigh...)
Holl
Liljegren
Oz (re-sign? ugh...)
LoVerde
Borgman (can he play the right side?)
UFA..?
Trade..? (Carolina?) |

10 years and 4 coaches later and the coaching still sucks, wow!!!!
Good thing Shanny runs the show....and not some of you guys. We’d have a new coach every 60 days.

I think your ? is why we'll see Zaitsev in a Leafs uniform until expansion |

And I think Patrick Marleau is why we won't see Zaitsev in a Leafs uniform. The Leafs need to move a hefty salary and I think Z is the only logical option they have (yes, I think Nylander stays). |

You are probably right here, but Leafs will have to expose better players than Zaitsev for Seattle for sure. If the leafs throw in a 2nd round pick maybe Seattle Steelheads will take Zaitsev.

Z has a signing bonus worth 3,000,000 July 1st.
That is worth noting. |

That's also when his Modified NTC kicks in too I believe... which makes trading him (potentially) a lot more difficult. |

I am aware, but 3 years can be a big difference when a players enters his late 30's.
And the Pens were forced into that situation. The Leafs give up big futures for a better D and have him 5th in TOI amonst D. They don't have to have Hainsey playing this role. And he's playing too much. He'll be useless in the playoffs. - RogerRoeper

Maybe the Leafs are going for the fences here to get Hamilton. Z has to be in that package along with Kappy and a 2nd and a prospect. |

Are you certain? Players with NMCs for sure MUST be protected but I don't see anything specific to NTCs...
Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. |

Carolina traded alot to get Hamilton and probably lost the trade badly. Hanifin is signed to a very good contract and same with Lindholm. If Canes traded Hamilton to the Leafs, it would be his 4th team and he's 25 years old. Have to wonder if he's got an issue. That said, if Canes move a d-man off their roster, I would think that Faulk or Pesce are much more likely than Dougie.

Each club has the option of protecting seven forwards, three defensemen and a goaltender, or eight skaters (forward or defense) and a goalie. All first- and second-year players, and all unsigned draft choices will be exempt.
Players with no-movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected by their teams.
Edit: There will be some changes based on trades, movement etc. Here is what I think might be the list.
Protected: Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Kapanen, Johnsson, Nylander, Kadri, Rielly, Muzzin and Zaitsev, Andersen
Exposed; Hyman, Brown, Dermott, Sparks, Gauthier, Holl
Exposing Dermott shows why it would be a great move to unload Zaitsev now. |
