The 70's was a great decade to be a Sabres fan. Thank you Punch.

Not much since.

Late to the party, been enjoying the beach.

I'm not fully convinced Phil is THE problem.
I'd say players who still won't fully commit to playing a system completely is a bigger problem. When they do commit, they can play with anyone, and surprise the defensive numbers are pretty, prwtty good.

The stink seeds to be cleaned up,
Take out the trash,
sit those who won 't fully commit

Barry Trotz
That guy is a freaking wizard or something
What he’s done with the Isles is nothing short of shocking

exactly why the sabres need to move on from Phil.... The sabres are not overachieving they never will with Phil as the head coach. Good coaches make their teams better... Does Phil make the sabres better... NO

Yeah, i figured it was for next season
Everything u did there makes total sense
But when u try to figure out how to play the actual game with that lineup,
then i think you start to run into issues

It’s also just 1 offseason,
and you’re asking quite a lot to be done

A more reasonable situation might be Smith & E Rod on line3 with Thompson,
and bringing back Girgs & Larsson for Line4 and keeping that the defensive line for another year

- jdfitz77

I think if I had the actual UFA list in front of me I could come up with something realistic. I’ll have to get back to you on that. It’s amazing what even a guy like Val Fippula has brought to that Isles team though. A veteran C that can actually pull his weight on that 3rd line makes this a completely different team.

There’s a lot of guys on this team that ppl want gone
Can’t blame Phil for what he has to work with

BUT

Does he need a perfect roster (or at least a really good one) in order to be an effective coach?

If that’s the case (seems like it is),
then he’s not the right coach for us right NOW

Idk... you’re talking about filling 7 holes
That’s a lot to do in an offseason

I’d be very happy if we just figured out a partner for Dahlin, and went into the season confident we’d have 2 lines that could score for us

Tough to figure out a goalie upgrade at the moment for next year
6k is still years away & we don’t really know what we’ve got in him yet
I think we role with the Ullmark/Hutton tandem again
If we keep that SJ 1st,
I’d definitely consider using it on Spencer Knight (if the Sabres like him)
I think we need another really good goalie prospect in the system
Can’t have too many imo

The first part of my post is as important as the last part though

Ppl are overly bashing Phil
Really, what’s he gonna do with Sobotka, Okposo, Scandella, etc?
They just are what they are at this point

He does actually have Larsson & Girgs playing effectively...
which MANY on here should consider a miracle based on their previous statements about those players

He’s bringing along Dahlin correctly imo too
Smart not to put too much on him too soon
Phil hasn’t been ALL bad

But at the same time...
it’s become pretty obvious he isn’t the right coach for our team at this stage of its development

Q seems like an obvious target
Who knows if he’d come here or not though?

Yea Bogo ends up third pair and Hutton/Ullmark remains the tandem next season I’d assume. So really it would only be 5 holes.

RHD for Dahlin (Stralman, Myers lol, Engelland, Karlssson would be a pipe dream). Most likely would have to be obtained through trade.

1st Line RW and 2nd line LW (Stone, Silfverberg, Nyquist, Zuccarello, Dzingel, M. Johansen, Simmonds, Eberle and Lee If Isles don’t retain them) not all of them are flashy but they get the job done for a couple years. Also possibility of a trade.

3rd Line LW and 2/3rd Line C (possible Sheary stays and fills the winger spot and guys like Hayes, Brassard, Filppula, Tanev) or anyone mentioned above.

There are a ton of options in FA this year to at least make this a playoff team next year or give us a much better shot.

The most important ingredient. Get that young stud winger/centre that supplements Eichel, Reinhart, Skinner and Mitts in two years time when those guys are even better then they are today.

My guesses on your theoretical roster for next year are below:

Nelson and Bogo are the 6/7 with maybe Hunwick the 8th.

Stone is obvious for the number 1 RW position, at least as a target.

Maybe Ferland and Olofsson for LW, and maybe Brock Nelson for C, or would he cost too much?

Is Nick Jensen an under the radar pick up for an RHD?

All of these definitely work. The Sabres will have an abundance of options. Especially if they can get rid of Sobotka and Scandella. Beaulieu we know is a goner. I’d hope Botts moves Sheary as well but I also can see him being on the team next year. We have a boatload of picks, a boatload of cap space, and the two most important positions on the team sans the goaltender looked down (Eichel, Dahlin).

This is the guy we should be moving first rounder + for. Even if it takes two first rounders this guy is Dahlin’s partner for the next 8 years.

Story of any buffalo fans life. Just getting old. I just don’t care anymore. I have given up my will to have any emotional connection to this team. Sad really because I love hockey and WNY. I just can’t invest any more of my emotions. I’ll still watch but won’t care if we win or lose.

The whiners on this site make me laugh, Die Hard Sabre fans? Boo Hoo, we lost a game, didn't play very well, So, go jump off the bandwagon. Fire Housley? every other day it seems. He's highly regarded around the league, but the key board GM's question his knowledge. This is my town and my team and I stick with them through thick and thin. So, when you so called fans are ready to get back on board, I will be in the front seat of the Bandwagon, although I hope there's no room for you.

140 games later

how is Housley a better coach?

not better record, because the talent is better

how is he a better head coach?

what is he doing better now vs 100 games ago?

not a better winning record, hell we got dahlin, skinner and a slight upgrade in net

how is Phil a better coach then last fall?

I doubt you will answer
