Canes average the most shots per game of any team in the league (35.5) and the fewest shots against per game (27.9)

Oilers average the 5th lowest shots for per game (28.9) and are in the upper half of the league in shots against per game (31.4)

Overall, Carolina is the only team in the league with over 2000 shots on net, and have managed to hit the net 404 more times than the Oilers have this year with only one more game played.

- BINGO!

So we will get outshot....again....well at least it’s nothing new

Edit: That stat of hitting the net 404 more times then the Oilers is eye opening

Beyond this, I think they've wrongly characterized him as some power sniper just because of his size and a few slapshot goals he scored in junior when in reality he's more of a playmaker. I think also think there's a legitimate argument that Puljujarvi might just not have the cognitive ability to keep up. How a Finnish guy pursuing a hockey career and doesn't learn English along the way speaks to a larger issue in his intellectual toolkit that may also be linked.

I was just curious what the problem seems to be - skating or lack of hockey IQ or ??? The word on Dylan Strome was similar in that he just wasn't producing the way a top draft pick should but the knock on him was skating - not hockey IQ. He has done better than expected since the Hawks acquired him and I was wondering if Puljujarvi could be another "diamond in the rough" the Hawks could acquire. Now that you mention that it could be lack of cognitive ability to keep up - I'm less hopeful.

He's kind of dumb.

Folks I know in Finland who raved about Aho since he was like 15 have very little good to say about Pulju.

Think of him as a guy who plays football in Edmonton and dreams of playing for the Eskimos. That's all he wants, but he has enough talent that the NFL takes notice. He signs because, (frank) it, football is football and how do you turn down that money? But when he gets there and sees that he has enough talent to play, but the rules are a little different and the effort level required is extreme, he has trouble adapting and flounders, because it was never really where he wanted to be anyway.

Chia was brutal but far from the only issue....it’s all of management....why is it after a decade of losing that these clowns still have a job? It’s easy to point out to one guy and say it’s all of his fault but let’s be real....for as stupid as Chia is this franchise was a laughing stock before he took it over

The cognitive ability thing is by no means definitive; just a suggestion that's out there. Not only is there not yet a confirmed link between measurable cognitive ability and success at the NHL level (see Lucic, Milan), but it's not like I've met the guy or am aware of the finer points of his being. I raise that to point out that maybe it's a linguistics skill issue that leads to him not being able to learn English well enough yet. There's a lot of important nuance that needs to be conveyed at such a high level of play and it's likely being missed in Jesse-to-old school coach (Todd and Hitch) communications.

Some of the players who drafted after Puljujarvi

Matthew Tkachuk
Clayton Keller
Mikhail Sergachev
Charlie McAvoy
Alex DeBrincat
Carter Hart
Victor Mete

Imagine if they drafted Tkachuk instead of him and Tkachuk with McDavid.

- Leafsfan4

Tkachuk was risky too...

English is required learning as part of the Finnish curriculum.

Aho and Laine were almost but not quite fluent when they made the jump.

(You learn an awful lot about Finland and the people there when both the WHL and NHL teams you cheer for start regularly stockpiling players from that part of the world and suddenly they both have a bunch of Finnish fans)

Like, Fleury's fine and his usage this year has been upsetting, but yeah I wouldn't trade Pulju for a guy who's probably a #4 defenseman at his peak.
- BINGO!

If I'm moving Jesse, it's for a return similar to what Arizona got for Strome. If I can't get that, I'll keep him and play him with McDavid next year as he probably already ought to be. Might've been a poorly-planned attempt to keep the cap hit of his 2nd deal down; I wouldn't put that past this Oilers team at all.

I know. My whole family is from the Nordic countries and it's a pretty uniform education model across the board there. English being mandatory and Puljujarvi not knowing it at all despite living in Oulu for much of his life says to me that either it was a linguistic capacity issue or a willingness issue. Neither are good signs, but one is clearly better than the other.

If Stolarz is the player coming back then he will be resigned or why do it to begin with?
- RatedR80

Cap space to active Sekera. Whether it is Stolarz or Elliot coming back, I would guess the cap space is the sole reason for the trade. Stolarz could certainly be resigned though if he shows well as a backup (with our D).

Those I've talked to say it's more a willingness thing, but that's all conjecture.

MacT was no genius either... So who the (frank) knows... at the very least MacT was hesitant to purge assets... which likely meant more lotto picks but who knows we could have been a contender or near one...

Maybe there's an argument to be made that Oilers should have taken a Dman because it was a position of need at the time, but many teams go with the "best player available" strategy, and Puljujarvi was the consensus BPA at pick number 4. Any team in that draft slot would have taken him
- Garth_Mctavish

Except Columbus. I still find it a bit curious that the Fin passed on the Fin in that spot. Would have been nice if everything went as originally planned and we ended up with Tkachuk, or Sergatchev, or Dubois.
