EK's states in his latest blog that "the final pieces are being put in place that will send Mark Stone to Winnipeg".
So he will likely be heading elsewhere then soon.
On a serious note, however, I believe EK feels this in part as being possible due to Stone being raised in Winnipeg, although being drafted by Ottawa. |

Yeah the Rangers have 3 guys that are overpaid in Smith, Staal and Shattenkirk. He's a time 20 goal scorer. Is he fan favorite, yeah. Fan favorites get traded all the time. Zucc's intangibles didn't help this team last year and haven't helped this year. It's over move on. - tomburton99
I mentioned on the prior blog two days ago in wondering whether Gorton is trying to trade Smith to a team via his agreeable submitted teams list in his Modified NMC, even if it would be necessary to retain 50% of Smith's remaining annual $4.35M for the next two seasons. That way it would save the Rangers over the next 4 years slightly over $2M in combined cap space, instead of absorbing the 4 years total cap hit charges it would cost them if buying his contract out this summer ($970,833, $3,145,833, $1,145,833, and $1,145,833 in succession). It would also create a roster spot for one of their back line youth like Lindgren possibly.
Either scenario is benefited by the fact that effective next season, Girardi's cap hit charge lowers from $3.61M this season, to only $1.1M for each of its remaining 3 upcoming years. |

If Gorton doesn't get anything for either Zucc or Hayes then he's failed miserably. This is another golden opportunity to add to the farm system. |

In addition to Bob McKenzie's words first spoken on NBCSN two nights ago, and later tweeted like Jan included in this blog, as to the trade value of Zucc, Hayes, and McQuaid as rentals, he also answered a fan's question submitted that night on their "NHL Overtime" post game show.
It was in reference to those who think that the Rangers if trading any, can easily re-sign any of them in the summer as free agents. McKenzie stated that a scenario like that "has rarely ever occurred in the past in the NHL".
If there was ever a player where that may occur, it would be with Zucc with his great devotion and desire to remain a Ranger, provided he isn't offered a contract out of the Rangers plans, should he continue his recent great play with his new team if dealt. Hayes and McQuaid have also expressed enjoying their time as Rangers.
I can't recall a then NHL eligible UFA at a minimum annual salary of $2.5M, who after being dealt prior to the deadline as a rental, had a few months later re-signed during the upcoming off season with the team that traded him. If so, it was most likely for less money and term on their new deal, as it would be in the case here for a Zucc or McQuaid, with Hayes in contrast, seeing his increase. |
