So here is a theoretical ideal

Say they move a few players out and they get another teams 2nd

Would it be smarter for them to move the 2nd to Carolina to get their 3rd back?

You know if they actually plan on offersheeting someone???

Can you imagine the GMs panic if they see a team trade to get their original pick back just so that team could send out an offer sheet?

- Stripes77

Theoretically if Botts was actually serious about offer sheeting, which, no one actually is, then yes, you go back to Carolina and give them a 2nd for your 3rd or whatever.

If we would have traded Pu and a 2nd for Skinner and a 3rd Botts would never ever ever be on the hot seat in his entire life!

- Stripes77

Yeah, good point
Once ya look at it like that, i was crazy to think the 3rd was coming to us
No clue why i had that mixed up?

I think that's the point. If the NHL wants to see offer sheets cause chaos like the fans want, the entire system needs to be restructured, and there needs to be incentives for GMs to (frank) their friends. Because clearly they're not doing that right now.
- TheSabresTaco

Oh i know. I intended for that post to be dripping with sarcasm. No one has an interest in doing anything about it. The PA won't put up a stink because they're protecting the older, established players by colluding with the owners to keep young players' salaries down.

Now if we reach a critical mass of RFA-eligible players outnumbering veteran membership in the PA, that might change, but as soon as players leave the RFA system for the UFA system, they basically say to the next generation: "suck it up, i dealt with it and paid my dues. your turn."

Here's what the Sabres can actually do.
$1,339,575 or less (no comp)
$2,029,660 to $4,059,322 (2nd)
Over $10,148,302 (4 1sts)

Thanks Fitz, you made it worse.

- TheSabresTaco

Hahaha

We all suck at this

I am glad we are not NHL GMs!!

But seriously lets mess with teams and start signing offer sheets

Here is the full chart

I mean, you're right. Point was brought up for imaginary offer sheet talk, Johnson would be an off season cap clearance that the Sabres should be all over, Palat is fine, Coyle is fine, Montour probably isn't going anywhere.

They could send Carolina something at the deadline to get their 2020 3rd back

Maybe Sheary or Larsson/Girgs
Probably have to throw in a lower pick like a 5th or 4th maybe?

Interesting idea Stripes
Let’s do it!

We don't have our 2nd so it eliminates some offer sheet offers.

This is the way the league is going. The Milan Lucic, Kyle Okposo, Brad Richards et al contracts are a dying breed. You'll still have the Rangers paying Scott Gomezs of the world 10 million, but other than that.. there's a shift moving through, and there's a huge amount of RFAs, and Ottawa's prime players, hitting the market. Thanks, Ottawa.

Problem is, no one's giving up 4 first round picks for an RFA. Not even Kucherov. For everything else, the GM will likely have no problem matching, and all you did was irritate that GM. Either that, or GMs would rather put a package together than use their 1sts. The opposing GM isn't going to let a guy go over a measly 3rd or 2nd rounder.

If the McDavids beat the Hurricanes tonight, and the sabres win, the Sabres leapfrog Carolina with 1 game still in hand

Some teams are ripe to be picked with an offersheet, their cap space is going to be extremely tight

Tampa and Toronto for one are going to be very tight.

A first, second, and third offer 6-8 million could do some real damage to a team
