This is just what the doctor ordered for the Leafs, we don't need goons but if you add Ferlands physicality along with "checkers" Kadri, Hyman, Muzzin, Hainsey I'd be happy with that level of physicality during the playoffs. Heck, even Johnsson and Gauthier have been playing heavier as of late. LFG!!! I'd also like to add Dzingel if possible.

Imagine this playoff squad:

Marleau - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Ferland - Kadri - Kapanen
Dzingel - Gauthier - Johnnson
Brown

Who knows, I'm just going on the predictions set out by ESPN (i know) that says they think Leafs trade for him!

He's a good player, but strictly by observation over the past, power forwards, and Ferland is a good one, get older quicker. Maybe the wear and tear burns them out quicker. Look at Lucic, he was a monster in Beantown, but has been a wet fart in Edmonton. I'd worry about a long term deal for any team. He would be strictly a rental for the Leafs and I agree with you that he's not going to be moved as a rental.

Doubt Dubas would be willing to pay the price to land him. Good player for sure, who do you give up on the current roster for him?

Let's not forget about the talent still in the Marlies. The cupboard is full, there's no need to overspend for a little bit of now.
- TrashPanda

Keep in mind I don't watch the Marlies or any junior hockey, but from everything I've read, the Leafs' talent cupboard is pretty bare right now.

Yeah, I read that one. Seems like it's about 3 weeks old.

Canes are one point out of a playoff spot and play the teams they're chasing a couple times. I'd be stunned to see them trade Ferland given their position and how well the team is playing.

They're 14-5-1 in their last 20 and have the best record in the NHL since January 1st.

What if it was for a player like Johnsson?

I believe either JT or AM's contract is up around the time that McJesus will be an FA.
Simply sign him then.

- Fakepartofme

I meant lots of time for Oilers to try turning their franchise in that time to entice McDavid to stay.

I don't care to try and get him right now in a possible trade. Like you said, I'd rather them try and sign him when he becomes a free agent.

No point going for Dzingel just to put him on the 4th line, he is much better than that. He would easily take Marleau's spot if anything. But that won't happen anyways so no need to worry about it. Doroin has said many times he has no interest in trading with division rivals.

Maybe, but still think they'd need another piece I think to convince them, but I'd do it.

I'd think a 1 for 1 would be pretty fair, maybe a touch overpayment for the Leafs because Johnsson is younger and an RFA, not a UFA. But overall, similar numbers but Ferland gives the Leafs more grit.

Sure, and it gives the Canes a bit more control over an asset moving forward, though not much. There's only 2 years difference in age between the two.

Hypothetical answers:

1. That's an awful lot of cap hit. But just for furn, I'd trade Nylander instead of Marner. The return will be less, but that's because Marner is better.

2. If McDavid demands a trade, why do we need to sweeten a McDavid for Matthews swap? They won't get a better offer than that.

- Atomic Wedgie

Teams would put together a better package then Matthews on his own. But I don't see anyone offering a better player the Matthews. It would be quality vs quantity debate.

I think you would have to pull the trigger on that trade, even if you had to add a little more like a 2nd rounder or B prospect. But with that said, Matthews potential is some what difficult to read right now. 2 season with shoulder injuries. Before the shoulder injury, and even a couple of games after, he was the best player, if not very close to best player in the league. Shoulder injuries are different to rehab, especially in the middle of a season. He can say all the right things, he may be 90%, but I don't think he'll be 100% for the majority of the season if at all this season.

Oh he's all talk when it comes to that. Good stickhandling but never manages to hit the back of the net.

Very disappointing. If he had another inch...he'd have two.
