Well feel free to define a franchise defenseman then. - Glak18
It's a bit arbitrary, to be honest. But if I had to put some characteristics:
Excels at both the offensive and defensive side of the game.
Plays top minutes against the other team's top players.
Assumes a leadership position, either on-ice or off-ice.
Plays on both the PK and PP.
Basically, the guy who you can build your defense around. This is very broad, obviously guys like Karlsson don't excel defensively, but his offensive game is so overwhelming that it makes up for it. |

Lol c'mon man everyone has a different view on what a franchise defenseman is. There's no set definition - bulet13
Agreed. For example in my view, a #1 defenseman is a player of a certain caliber and not necessarily the best defenseman on the team. Some teams don't have a #1 NHL defenseman. |

So, just to be clear...a "franchise" defenseman is a HOF-caliber defenseman?
If that's the case, then that's just a disagreement on nomenclature. - jmatchett383
Well I didn't ask this question and secondly I asked for HIS definition. C'mon people need to read everything instead of selectively picking and choosing what they want to read if they want to inject. |

The Flyers would do Simmonds for Johnson in a second.
Tampa Bay definitely would not.

To me a "Franchise" defenseman is someone that is so good, they likely become the best player of that position in team history. Exceptions for having guys like Lemieux and Crosby and McDavid and Gretzky. - youarewrong
So Ray Bourque, Zdeno Chara, Larry Robinson, Rob Blake, and Chris Chelios would not be classified as "franchise" defensemen? I would disagree. |

Right. I was trying to figure out what he used as a "franchise" tag (which he clarified, and I disagree with). I appreciated his input, even though we disagree.
Thanks for playing. |

In theory, yes. Anaheim had Pronger and Niedermayer, NJ had Niedermayer and Stevens, Nashville had Suter and Weber. |

A lot of current teams in the NHL have multiple defensemen that excel at both ends of the ice and some of them excel more at one than the other and most of them the defense is built around them. Do they have to excel more than others? |

Yes, some defensemen are better at different aspects that others, I agree.

Yeah, I'm bailing on that convo.
Can we PLEASE go back to the circular conversations about the validity of analytical statistics? |

Yeah funny how someone can ask a simple question about the possibility of Provorov getting an offer sheet and what could happen which turns into the advocating of letting him go for worthless picks.
In all seriousness, don't worry about right and wrong just worry about not being a toxic member on the forum for once. |

Speaking of toxic
So we are losing our franchise Dman for an overpayment of $500k? What do you honestly think his next contract is going to be? I see it anywhere from 5.5-6.5 - ClaudeFather
Attention all internet keyboard warriors, people say things and don't mean exactly what they said. In this case i would assume the point was that taking multiple firsts in compensation for Provorov would not amount to a Dman equal to Provorov nor would the sum of the drafted players. Provy is a franchise Dman which will be very difficult to replace. - ClaudeFather

Here is my take:
I consider a "franchise" defenseman to be a guy who will be a clear #1 on your team for a decade. A guy who is considered to be among the top d-men in the game during the time he plays.
A #1 defenseman is a guy who is your clear cut top d-man in any given year who could also be considered a top pair guy on most teams. Some teams have none, some have more than one.
A top pair guy is the guy who gets most of the minutes on your team.
Its all opinion of course.
