He's making a little over a million more than your 31 year old goalie and his term will be over before Price's. - mgriffen
Price is Price , when he's on his game he's the best, and you need a great goalie to win a cup along with a strong D , toronto is a great offensive team , but they have no D and your goalie is good not great, I remember a series washington vs habs a few years back and the caps lost in 7 ,, playoffs is a different game altogether based on defense |

Again, name me another star player in their prime to leave their team as a free agent, not named Tavares? - Cooshie
If you say so. |

Marner is the #2 guy behind Tavares on his line. Matthews is not the #2 guy on his line.
There's a big difference between a 40-50 point Bozak as your center, and an 80+ Tavares as your center. - Buggy166
Marner stirs that drink in my opinion |

Terrible deal for the leafs. It is only 5 year deal and will be UFA after and will cost team 15-20 million (cap will keep going up). And if lockout happens he could be 35 at end of deal! Also he took no discount at all.
For example Pat Kane signed 5 year deal at 6.3 which was 9.8% of cap. Matthews is is at 14.2%. Kane had 88 point season, no injury problems and won a cup.
Matthews will make more then Mcdavid in his career.
Remember when I said it will cost over 11 for Matthews and you said Dubas will get him at team friendly 5 year deal under 10?

I just think it’s a strange deal. Maybe they’re angling to give him a huge deal that expires as he hits his 35 age year. - golfingsince
Their biggest cap issues is next year, right? This saves them cap space. |

Congrats. I had fans tell me he'd get 16 and would be in Arizona next season. |

People are worried about what this will do to Marner...Leafs already have a plan and general budget for the team they want to try and win a cup with for the next 5 years...its the other teams that are screwed. How much will this deal impact Tampa Bay and Point? What's Winnipeg going to do about Laine? Toronto is fine. Especially when Marleau is off the book and Nylander is traded |

Everyone thought this? C'mon man. Anybody who seriosuly thought that was either trolling, trolling for clicks, incredibly stupid or any combination of these including all of the above. Nobody whose opinion isn't already a tarnished piece of poop thought this - Takemedrunkimhome
There was some big name media people who said he was headed to the Coyotees.
The company which owns the Leafs had that on their website. |

How many NHL not named Tavares stars bolt their teams for UFA in the prime of their career? Chances of Matthews leaving at 26 are minuscule. - Cooshie
Chances are 100% he is gone after 5 years.

Ridiculous.
They have an entire year to sign him to an extension after year 4.
So they offer him 8 years, 17 million per and he says no? What if he gets injured that season? |

The funny thing is they didn't buy any of is "UFA year "
To me it means at 26 ( or 27 ?) he going to be looking at a big pay raise
I guess worry then... - Xizord

good luck trying to trade Marleau, at his age with his contract and limited NTC,, as for Nylander you'll get draft picks , no one will give you a top D for him |

Lot's of factors add up to cups. Plenty of cup winners don't have the best goalie or defense. You spend money on available high end talent. I remember series' where Nashville with their depth on D and goaltending couldn't get by the Penguins. Or the Rangers at their peak...couldn't get it done. Habs couldn't either. Lots more factors than just what you're putting out. Biggest issues for me right now with the leafs are - Gardiner still just loves to hand the puck over, and Sparks is our backup. If Andersen goes down, we're boned. |

Not many stars are free agents at 26. Kane, Toews and Tavares. So that 1/3. |

We got a top pair D for futures just last week.
Nylander has 5 points in 4 games. Just wait. Kid is a star. |

I completely get that man, I realize the world is made up of trolls and money, but as I mentioned that it would have been nice to see someone take less. Look at what Toews and Kane are doing to the Blackhawks salary cap. - brisc101
They won 3 Cups, tho. BTW. The Hawks cap is fine these days. Sucking kind of does that. |
