I wouldn't trade a retired Michael Nylander for Kronwall.

And I agree, but you are the one saying it was a good deal...

I think its just normal

- Xizord

Maybe, but read many saying he could sign a $14M or more offer from another team...and some saying it would take $13M to lock him up for the Leafs.

This contract probably is "normal" but with all that noise, it just seems good.

He's an idiot if he takes anything less than $10M

Mark Stone should be about $9M-$9.5M (reportedly he was offered $9M x 8 years)
Matt Duchene should be about $8.5M -$9M (reportedly he was offered $8M x 8 years)

Marner is looking like he's going to be better than both and with the cap going up, He'd be crazy not too get over $10M

- Maverick1818

We shall see....many had Matthews pegged for $13mill.

The funny thing is they didn't buy any of is "UFA year "

To me it means at 26 ( or 27 ?) he going to be looking at a big pay raise

I guess worry then...

I did as well, But I think the reason he took less is the shorter term.... Because with the cap going up, that typically means his next contract can be even bigger.

wow, a lot of money for one player , unfortunately better win this year cause it doesn't look good for next year , still a weak defense , and goalie is a ???? personally I still think Tampa is a lot stronger along with winnipeg, 3rd is nashville , Boston also is stronger than toronto IMO,, I put toronto as 5th best chance to win cup this year,, they've gotta get rid of a top 6 forward ,

Maybe Mark Stone didn't take the offer because he wants out of Ottawa. Wouldn't surprise me if he signed for $8 for a team that can compete and actually get into the playoffs.

Today @ 2:09 PM ET

A lot of talk about the starting of all these young RFA stars signing for huge $....cap needs to go up quite a bit more or these teams just won't be able to do it.....maybe just a ploy by Bettman to have more star power on poopty market teams...teams forced to trade star players and the only ones that will have cap space are the crappier teams you have room....who knows....so happy Matthews has signed but wish it was for 7-8...hope Marner now bites the bullet and signs 7-8 in a bit of a cap friendly deal....going to be sad to see one or two players go whom we really would prefer not to.......if Brown goes big mistake....in my books and don't care what any of you say he is very important to this club and should be a Leaf for life....plays with all heart and soul every game

Bob McKenzie suggests he took fewer years/lower cap hit to help keep the core together.

Sort of implies they all know Marner's camps number.

What irritates me is the .634 number. Unless the .634 means something to Austin, his agents were negotiating to the end and had to get every last penny that the Leafs would give. It wasn't 11.0 or 11.5. I just wanted one of the big 3 (Marner, Matthews, Nylander) to take a little bit of a break money wise. Show that maybe we could afford to keep Gardiner.

From the looks of it he didn't take a break at all, they lowered the yearly average by giving him less years.

For a guy making what? $925k this year on his rookie contract, does he really need $11 million next year at age 21? I understand it's a business and you take what you can get, but I'm sure he'd be fine making 9-10 million.

It's completely possible, the reports out now all say that Ottawa and both players are still negotiating, which means it's possible to sign them long term.

But reports have also said those numbers I listed (Stone $9m-$9.5M) (Duchene $8.5m - $9M) are what both those players would command on the open market, if not more.

He is number 34, hence the 34 at the end. Rumoured it would be like that for a long time.
I was hoping for 11.34, not 11.634, but not huge difference.

Have you ever negotiated a salary? You sort of look at comparables and market rates, not really settle for something you can live on (well in my experience anyways).

Never run a team by emotional rule. This is sure way to become the 80's Leafs again.
Brown is a fan favorite but if the right trade came along and Brown was the "+" in it...you don't turn it down because of emotional attachment.

Maybe they were at 11.6-11.7 and Matthews said "Lets do 11.634"

We have no proof of either. So who cares, we have him for at least 5 more years.

You need 7 years or age 27 to be a UFA.

"Any Player who either has seven (7) Accrued Seasons or is 27 years of age
or older as of June 30 of the end of a League Year, shall, if his most recent
SPC has expired, with such expiry occurring either as of June 30 of such
League Year or June 30 of any prior League Year, become an Unrestricted
Free Agent." -edited to exact wording from CBA.

3 ELC years + 5 contract years = 8 years

So he burnt one UFA year under this extension.
