I wonder if they will honor him with a ceremony the first time he comes back to Toronto as a New York Ranger. - Aetherial
Yes because the Leafs can't offer him a great deal. |
|
|
|
Their biggest cap issues is next year, right? This saves them cap space. - RogerRoeper
This is correct and they get relief the following year. The Leafs just couldn't give him the extra $$'s for long term or they would have had to move important player(s) next season.

There was some big name media people who said he was headed to the Coyotees.
The company which owns the Leafs had that on their website. - RogerRoeper
Yeah...trolling for hits works well for both majority owners of the Leafs. Best thing they can do for business |

Chances are 100% he is gone after 5 years. - Aetherial

The haters who said he'd be a Coyotee next year are now telling us 100% he is gone in 5 years. LOL - RogerRoeper
Gotta love Leaf haters..
Once they are wrong about one thing, they instantly jump to the next.
They can never leave things be...

good luck trying to trade Marleau, at his age with his contract and limited NTC,, as for Nylander you'll get draft picks , no one will give you a top D for him - italiano

Oil paid top $$$ to McDavid to get a bunch of his UFA years, Buffalo did the same with Eichel.
Toronto just paid top $$$ to get 1 year of Mathews as a UFA, who in 5 years time will demand a lot more money.
Leafs get out of cap hell today but have to sign a UFA to way more cash in 5 years.
I do not see this as a win for the Leafs unless they win a cup. Time will tell. |

Leafs paid market value for Matthews.
Edmonton paid over market value for extra years.
Don't equate ($'s) in a signing today vs. a signing almost 2yrs ago. |

People on here are saying yea but people said it would be more than Mcdavid….Yea, if it was 8 years maybe. This was not a great deal for the Leafs but it had to be done. They had zero leverage and will most likely take a hit on Marner too. |

Everyone thought this? C'mon man. Anybody who seriosuly thought that was either trolling, trolling for clicks, incredibly stupid or any combination of these including all of the above. Nobody whose opinion isn't already a tarnished piece of poop thought this - Takemedrunkimhome
Say you're saying don't take people's opinions or comments about the Leafs with any seriousness?. I do agree with that to be fair. Thus why I'm not believing Matthews' and Nylander's are bad for the Leafs |

Lot's of factors add up to cups. Plenty of cup winners don't have the best goalie or defense. You spend money on available high end talent. I remember series' where Nashville with their depth on D and goaltending couldn't get by the Penguins. Or the Rangers at their peak...couldn't get it done. Habs couldn't either. Lots more factors than just what you're putting out. Biggest issues for me right now with the leafs are - Gardiner still just loves to hand the puck over, and Sparks is our backup. If Andersen goes down, we're boned. - mgriffen
name me a team without a great D or goalie that won the cup, pittsburgh had excellent defenceman along with a guy called Crosby and Malkin ,, holtby was incredible last year in cup final and all season ,, ,, either way toronto stlll has to improve their defence , its not a team that could win a cup with this D regardless of offense which will be kept in check come playoff time |

Matthews is so good, and Dubas let him him get to UFA status at 26.
ouch. - classic321
that's so the CAP space frees up to sign Petterson. |

Me thinks you're a little irritated over this signing. Maybe hoping MB was gonna pick off one of The M and M boys at some point. Looks like another plan up in smoke. |

This not only was a good deal for the leafs, a smart move as well, considering next year is the tough one where every Million saved is important.

They might have way more cash in 5 years time. Next season they didn't. Thus (other than offering him a 1 year deal), they chose the next best option. |

Off course they can, the question then is will he be willing to take it / listen ?
That will depend if they can finally achieve some playoff success in the next years |

Yes, which is why Leafs signed the shorter deal for the smaller cap hit..it was necessary. It will sting on Matthews next contract but this allows them to keep their team intact.

I think this deal shows you the Leafs are thinking window to window and then re-evaluate. This is a great deal I think for both sides. The Leafs are not tied up for 10 years and Mathews gets large sums of money up front each season and will be an UFA around his mid 20’s. He has the ability to stay or go. I know it makes the cap right, but this is going to be about title or bust for about 5 years. |
