LeBrun just tweeted that over 90% of Matthews contract is signing bonus. What is the significance of that? Does that mean he gets paid all of that signing bonus on the day the contract goes into effect - essentially $50M on July 1, 2019 and then the remaining $5M spread out the 5 years of the contract?
- EbonyRaptor

Isn't it lockout protection - Matthews gets his signing bonus money on July 1, even if there is a stoppage after that.

Yep. The Leafs are going to have ~40M tied up in 4 players. Add Marleau and Kadri to the mix and that 50M in 6 players.

And Kapanen is also a RFA. They will LTIR Horton and that gives them another 5.5 ish

Offer sheet him for $4 million. It would cost the Hawks a 2nd round pick and it would be enough to make it difficult for Toronto to match. Anything north of $4 million ($4.059 million to be exact) would be a 1st and 3rd.

How do offer sheets work? Have to pony up draft picks?
- z1990z

Here is what this would cost to offer sheet Kapponen

$2,029,660 to $4,059,322 Second-round pick

offer him $4,059,322 it costs a 2nd

https://www.prohockeyrumo...r-sheet-compensation.html

$4,059,323 to $6,088,980 First and third-round picks
$6,088,981 to $8,118,641 First, second and third-round picks
$8,118,642 to $10,148,302 Two firsts, a second and third-round picks
Over $10,148,302 Four first-round picks

He would need to sign said offer sheet and I don't think he would for that amount. It would have to be in excess of 5M, IMO.

Hey Fatty, Q was the beneficiary of timmely goaltending. But he never could light up the PP as Cilliton seems to have done. All Q had to do was get the PP going and couldn't do it.

- 6628

5v5 hockey and talent is what wins cups.

Q is one of the best at running a bench and getting the right players on the ice.

All Q needed was 7 more roster players (9 if you dont count Murphy or Strome) and maybe he wouldn't have been fires.

This is a bad hockey team outside of a handful of players.

They were a better 5v5 team under Q. The only reason they aren't at the bottom of the table is a really good power play and timely goaltending.
- fattybeef

True but they were dreadful in scoring, the defense scares the poop out of me especially when certain dmen are in, special teams isn't bad with JC.

Man, Matthews getting almost double what Kane/Toews got on their 5 year bridge after ELC. Those were 5 x 6.3 mil at the time. I shudder to think what Toronto will have to pay him if the team has some success in the next 5 years.

Well well well Toronto only has $11.5 million left to sign Marner next year, with only 14 players under contract, and $5.5m of Nathan Horton, so lets say $17 mil to sign Marner and 8 other players. Nice to see other teams finally have to sell off assets

Who cares if they win cups...as long as they play the young players and have a good PP...its all that matters!

Why? Their first will be in the Mid 20's. Marleau is 100. I don't see the value for the Hawks.

The "Bridge Contract" is dead thanks to McDavid and company that followed suit. Gonna put teams in cap hell A LOT sooner than it did years ago. Won't see another team have a window like our Hawks and the Pens did years ago.

Side note, crazy that Crosby is still only making 8.7M per when guys aren't nearly as good as him are making several million more.

There's value to be had. If the Hawks aren't going to spend in FA (or wanna spend and are willing to eat some of his salary for the last year of his deal next year) you gain a 1st out of it. Good prospects come from the 20 range. We got Beaudin and people seem pretty excited about him

Q and like 15 other NHL coaches....

Q had no trouble running a bench with 15 olympians on it. You could close your eyes and have the right guys on the ice 95% of the time. Like all other coaches, figuring out how to max value your assets was a big challenge for him.

I will take a Belishek all day long, he will take what others do not want or value and still win.
