This is completely false, just on premise alone.

There are 93 players taken in the first three rounds every year, there are maybe 5 meaningful trades that are made each year

One team wins and one team loses each trade as well. So you have a 50% chance of winning one of the 5 meaningful trades all year and you have a 50-60% chance of getting a solid player in the top 15 of the draft and a 30%-40% chance of getting a player at the back end of the first round. The Sabres aren’t one trade away. We are multiple trades away. By the time we are a cup contender Dahlin, Skinner, Reinahrt will be making $7M+ as well. Factor that in to the guy you are trading for and where we would have to subtract in the roster to make up for it

sometimes draft picks don't work out, but proposing grossly one-sided trades always works

let's just make a bunch of trades, win them all, and then sign them all to team friendly deals
