the only people that I only really remember using that term, and using it in a sense of players for players only, was the TSN panel on trade deadline days. I seem to remember them using that reference a lot, but I agree with you, a trade involved picks or players is essentially a "hockey trade".

I uhm, like, I mean, I could see us making a hockey trade, you know, like where we acquire a player we think can help us both now and in the future, but we don’t want to move, like any of our draft picks to do it, so it would, you know, have to make sense for us and where we are now and next year.

Any transaction regarding the hockey team is a hockey transaction. Put a guy on waivers, pluck a guy off waivers, trade a player for a pick - who you hope will become a player, all hockey transactions.
