I think the world is always in a mind game. What happens if you ask for their better younger players to find out what they really want from you, then back down to an “older” player and give up a piece they wanted? So the Provonov guy, then back down to Coutuier.

So a rental d-man with term gets a prospect in Grundstrom who might top out as a 3rd line guy but most likely isn’t much of anything, an interesting d-prospect in Durzi and the first rounder.

The way I see it, Muzzin isn’t that great, or Botts is happier then a pig in #### that we have 3 cracks in the first round this year cause the Kings moved a good player to get a second kick at the can in the first round. I think this draft is better then the last few years but I also rely on YouTube and don’t get paid to travel around the world to watch these guys play.

It ultimately depends on what the ++ is. It would have to be the SJS first rounder as well. Even then it’s a tough call. He just turned 26 in December. I thought he was a year or two younger. Big fan of the player though. I still think this is a kind of trade we make in the offseason or next year when we have an even better idea of what we have. I thought this whole time that Couts was one of their untouchables but the Flyers GM is open for business.

But with how young & talented your best forwards are,
wouldn’t it make more sense to get a younger defenseman who can help for more than just the 1.5seasons?

Nope. I don't think Lidstrom would be the missing peice in this defense.

I think he can help though. Pair him with Reilly and move Hainsey down should help everyone.

Rumour is Matthews and Marner might be willing to do a shorter contract to keep the cap hit down a bit. Looks like they want to get through next year and then spend the extra 12 mil once Marleau and Horton are done

They would have to give up a core or roster piece for that. Or better prospects (Sandin, liljegren)
Gave up a 1st rounder and prospects for a good piece without jeopardizing the lineup. Good move imo.
Hamilton, parayko, pietro would’ve cost that plus a kapanen or Johnsson, which leafs didn’t want to part with. Keeps the forward group intact and adds a top 4 defenceman to the team.

Muzzin seems to be a part of the equation and not the final hurrah. Probably won't see the Leafs go all in until Matthews and Marner have new contracts is my guess.

They didn't lose anyone from the roster and keep their best two d prospects.

I just think Dubas tried to upgrade the D without selling the farm. Leafs are still a couple of years away from really going for it imo

I’d take 3 first rounders and keeping the farm intact and signing Nyquist and Dzingel over overpaying for anyone. If the Leafs are still one to two players away as you specified in your last reply to Bryant then we are 4-5 guys away along with Mittelstadt and Thompson developing further.

Honestly, probably not. Need another good/great defenceman and hope Freddie doesn’t poop the bed in playoffs.
It all depends if you can peak at the right time. All the leafs have sucked for the last month for the most part so it looks worse then it should be, but they’re still a top 5 team so who knows.

You named 17 players out of 950 plus players. That's an abysmal hit rate.

The draft is a crap shoot that really falls off after the first few picks. Yes, great players are found later in the first round and later in the draft, but they are the exceptions.
