"That said, a case could be made that the front office is ultimately responsible for offering contracts and signing players, so the players shouldn't be blamed for a team's foolishness."

This.
Every time we have a lockout its to save the owners from themselves, then their GM's figure out how to beat the system in order to do the things that the lockout was supposed to prevent.
Teams should be allowed a buyout a year that doesnt count against the cap or something. But besides that, the fans shouldn't suffer to keep the owners from hurting themselves.

if you had a buyout every year

do you buy out Sobotka or Scandella for 2019-20 and save Okposo for 20-21?

I am shocked at myself for not even suggesting Bogo

I doubt they send him down. If Wilson gets recalled, easy move is to waive Elie.

I feel bad seeing someone/anyone get waived.
Everyone has bills to pay right?
But waiving Elie would be my choice and I hate to say that but, business is business.

it was proposed that an owner could buy out 1 contract a year with no penalty

so would you move okposo right away, or remove another slug in year 1, and okposo in year 2

In Elie's case if he gets waived and goes unclaimed and heads to Rochester, he'll make the same salary down there.

I would do Okposo in year 2 and probably Scandella in year 1.

Dallas probably just takes him back. Guy has a contract, no reason to feel bad if it happens.

I'll quibble with one thing regarding couldn't be happier about the game, and that's the flow of the game.

Yes, it's faster, but it could be even faster and have a better flow if they cracked down again on all forms of obstruction.

They won't do that, but they really should.

Unfortunately, this would become a trade commodity that only wealthy teams would be able to do. Yeah, we'll take your bloated contract and buy it out for you, but you have to send us a pick, prospect or both. This would most likely be the argument against. But they could word it that you can only buyout a player you signed or they have to play for the team for at least a season before the buyout, etc.
Or at least offer a "negotiated buyout" where the GM works with the Agent on a number to walk away or risk getting "Moulsoned."

I really enjoyed the article.

At times it could have been blessed with the classic ‘unpopular puffin’ meme, but you backed it up with some strong facts and concrete numbers.

I’m also inclined to agree with you that presently the product is as entertaining as it has been in quite some time. Unfortunately, I wish my team was more of a part of this exciting and high powered movement, but hey, them’s the breaks.

Well done.

They can’t, in the disingenuous name of player safety

I'm clearly the crazy minority because I'd take it a step further and make it a penalty if a player is hit without the puck.

Okposo would be bought out in year 1, this is summer time. By end of training camp Sobotka (who isn't horrible) and Scandella (this guy prays everyday that Nelson is still hurt) will play their way to the waiver wire.

Filling those roles within the organization:

Okposo replaced by Nylander

Sobotka replaced Smith, Asplund needs more time (I haven't even seen him play but I haven't heard about him since the beginning of the season

Scandella replaced by Nelson with Guhle getting the call to fill the Blow-U spot if trade doesn't bring back a player

I get the forechecking interference as protecting the D men, but the neutral zone obvious interference that’s never called is nuts

it's a quick jump over the pond to watch the fairies tip-toe through the tulips on the futbol pitch.

Set down your tea and crumpets and grab a manly beer like michelob ultra and stop complaining about physicality in a checking sport.
