He'll be bought out. He's been worse in the AHL than he was in the NHL. Which is... yikes.

Sad to see that. Did he fall off the wagon?

there are some ridiculous trade suggestions there, but none more ridiculous than Saad for Hamilton. To get Hamilton would cost Chicago at least Debrincat, Murphy, and a prospect. You have to remember they moved Lindholm and Hanifin to get him.
- malcolmthornton

Saad is more valuable to the Hawks than he is on the trade market. I might be in the minority here, but I’d rather have him on my team than someone like Dzingel who is having a career season and will be getting a similar payday this offseason without the consistency/track record that Saad has.

Also, the shine is off of Hamilton, who has been playing like a #4-#6 this year in Carolina, and this is on top of the fact that he could possibly be looking at his 4th team in 5 years. I bet Carolina would rather have Hanifin back now. Sorry, but I wouldn’t even trade ADB one-for-one for Hamilton. ADB is going to be a 40-goal scorer in this league.

Why would the Hawks give up all that for Simmonds and his expiring contract? He's going to get too much money and too much term from somebody this summer. And if the articles I read about all the injuries he's played through are true, I would be even less inclined. Certainly a warrior, but if there are actuarial tables for durations of careers like his, I can't imagine they look very good past age 30.
- 333inthe3rd

TBF, he did say an extended Simmonds. Simmonds is gonna hit the Lucic zone real soon and let some other team regret that contract.

A heads up for those interested in seeing Hawk 5th round pick Mikeal Hakkarainen. He plays for USHL Muskegon and the game vs Fargo will be on Hockey TV tonight at 6:15. It's the game of the week for HTV and it's FREE. One USHL game per week is free on HTV. https://www.hockeytv.com/#/schedule

Muskegon has the best team in the USHL right now playing .778 hockey, great little arena with a fantastic PBP man in Scott Bradford . Fargo is 6th in the West playing .574 (the West is bruuuutal), have Ben Meyers who leads the league in goals & scoring and are defending champs.

- Mr Ricochet

Mr. R. - thanks for the reminder. I meant to put this in the blog. Check this game out if you can guys and gals.

Chicago has managed well drafting warrior type players outside of round one. Shaw, Keuger two of the better choices. Barret may be along the same line or character....we shall see.

I would love to have a top line fast skill center so that you could draft a B Tzachuk in round one.

Let the young guys take the pounding on their body; not an older grizzled veteran with injury concern/background.

That's bad. Sucks. He really is a good guy and hoped he was do well.
Why buy him out though? Do the Canes plan on spending to the cap?

- Elbows15

Because it's cheaper than spending $4.15 million on a guy that's buried in the AHL.

And it's because they've only got about $26~ million in cap space next year (assuming the cap goes up to around $83 million) and they only have 12 guys under contract.

Aho needs a new contract, so there goes at least $8 million, probably more.

They have no goalies signed other than Darling and need to a few forwards.

This one is a bit peculiar:

Anders Bjork from BOSTON BRUINS for Chris Kunitz and John Hayden

I don't know jack about Bjork, but what do the hockey intelligentsia project for his NHL career? I would think that at a minimum, the Hawks could get late round picks for both players mentioned.

Nice article on Barratt.

Sounds like much more of a play maker with an edged then a lower line Shaw type.

No idea, but maybe. Whatever happened it's definitely mental.

I doubt he's overly motivated, though, given that the Canes have flat out said they're not going to try and rehab his career anymore and he's been relegated to an AHL back-up.

He's got a .880 in 11 starts in the AHL now this year. Last year was bad, this year he was even worse.

Love Wayne Simmonds. The dude is a gamer. But man...he's 30 already and do we really want another guy on the wrong side of 30 signed to a long term contract?

You mean like Duncan Keith, who you'd be moving out in the deal?

Ah.. For some reason thought Darling only had another season after this one on his contract.

Please explain. And no, I'm not being a Richard here, just trying to understand the strong reaction.

I actually think this is a reasonable deal.

Hawks get Darling back (even if they have to bury him). Carolina is already burying his contract so whatever. Hawks take his bad contract and Canes get Seabs.
Carolina gets Seabrook (no e at the end this time). Getting towards the end of his career but can act as a mentor to a younger Carolina team.
Carolina gets a young top 6 forward in Saad
Hawks get Williams where they can either flip him to a contender at the deadline or just let his contract expire
TVR is a not incredibly talented but he can eat up minutes for the Hawks.
Buffalo's second? I just threw that in there.

- MNHawk

The last thing the Hurricanes need or want is more defensemen, let alone an old and expensive one.

Seabrook is this board's exhibit A in that regard. Keith is cost controlled, and his actual salary drops with each passing year, also.

Yes, but he's signed until 39 and the cap hit stays the same.

Not saying he's an albatross, simply that he fits the bill.

lol you bastard.

But yeah, Darling's buy-out is about $1.2 Mill per season for the next 4 years.

30-31 point pace, less than 20 minutes a night, and minimal PP contribution is not exactly a recipe for a top pairing offensive-minded d-man which is what the Canes were acquiring him to be (with an apparent attitude problem too).

Granted that he’s no longer playing with Giordano (not a knock on Slavin), more has been expected of him, which has essentially been a narrative that has followed him everywhere he has gone.

And as I said before, Simmonds is very likely going to get someone to give him too much money and too much term this summer. Seen this movie too many times.

And what's the story on Curtis Lazar? Given the Hawks couldn't give away Davidson already, fine, try him out. I see he was a mid first rounder, so there's that, even though pedigree from five years ago and four bucks only gets a cup of coffee at Starbucks these days.
