I agree Risto plays probably 4-5 minutes too many. I do not think you'd see a significant decrease in his points. It's not nearly as black and white as you suggest. .
- Wetbandit1

Risto is the mystery moving forward

he is down to around 25 minutes a night, 5% less playing time then the past few years

which is about where he should be playing, maybe a minute less but that's it as he is on the #1 pp unit

he also just turned 24 and is about to come into his prime

the key, which everyone ignores

if Dahlin is going to play the left, Risto is perfect for this team

if Dahlin is going to play the right, sell Risto if someone overpays

If you dump the puck, you're really asking Sam and Skinner to win puck battles. Neither are good at it.

have you watched reinhart the last 13 months?

that is part of the game that has improved the most

he has gotten much better in this category

aside from the sabres win streak, they are 14-18-6

time to turn it up a notch so they can beat the leafs in the first round

If you dump the puck, you're really asking Sam and Skinner to win puck battles. Neither are good at it.

Eichel is their best play maker and shooter, but he really isn't a consistent shooter and everyone in the NHL, dating back to Bob Woods, knows that's the #1 option and cheats towards it.

Phil's tried other options for the other 4 spots on the ice and nothing has really clicked. I don't think he has good options. Skinner is not great PP guy, and never has been. Sam's very easy to defend. We're really counting on a rookie D to step in as a shooting forward and be our #2 threat....and the kid is good enough that he's going to make it work.

- Lunaion

Sam is destroying his previous points/ assist Mark
Eichel is a top 5 passing center in the world
Skinner is 2nd in goal scoring in the nhl
Risto is on pace for 50 points
Dahlin is the "mcdavid" of defense

Something beyond talent is slowing the pp down.

My guess is coaching or bad coaching

If the players phil is putting on the ice aren't getting it done, he should change it up.

Okposo can battle for the puck
So can skinner and eichel

*the legend can still put the puck in the net on the pp, given the opportunity

I don't think that should be confused with dump and chase against someone's top PK unit.

I'm not sure he will. We all thought that once Dahlin was put there he'd be gone, but that's not the case.

He may well end up being taken off, but everything we know today says he won't.

- Wetbandit1

I’m not either, but I guess what I’m saying is in his circumstances, 40 points is like the bare minimum someone should put up, not a feat.

Like I pointed out, Phil's swapped all 4 other guys on the ice with Eichel.

When Eichel is your #1 shooting threat and Dahlin is #2, there's going to be a ton of inconsistency.

for those who think Risto is really good

watch Hedman for a 5 or 6 game stretch

he does so many little things w/o effort that risto has yet to be consistent at doing

Exactly. Risto makes the flashy plays every now and then, and sometimes they are incredibly impressive, but he doesn’t do the little things well

he has the highlight plays, checks that box
he has the outlet pass, checks that box
he can turn it up and make the hits, checks that box

also makes too many turnovers, floats a bit in our end and does not do a good enough job clearing the front of the net

again he just turned 24, but the issues now are the same issues from 3 years ago

if you pair him with dahlin, he will be fine IMO
if dahlin is going to play 26 minutes a night on the right in the near future, look to teams that want to over pay for risto

2 years ago, I was on the fence if a hall for risto swap was on the table, now I would clearly trade risto for hall straight up

hope this makes sense

I'm not comparing risto to hedman or dahlin.

More so the other 200 nhl defenseman currently
And 50 or so past Sabres defenseman.

Risto is still just 24.
Defenseman play years in the minors to develop their craft.

hedman is 4 years older, but has been playing at this elite level since he was 22 IMO, 2 years younger then risto

I don't see the growth in risto

I don't see the regression I saw in myers, but also don't see improvement
