James,
Thanks for stirring up the pot!
The Coyotes had a disallowed goal earlier this year when the puck had the same amount of "white" beside the puck being over the line.
The intent of the rule should not be to "get it correct" down to the most miniscule of margins. It should be to eliminate the "obviously missed" offside calls!
If the call went the other way and against the opposition, I'm sure that we would all be hearing a different tune from Montreal and its fans. - milamidb1
Where do you draw the line? ... should it be a goal if the puck goes over the goal line or if it just touches it slightly?
Do you want rules or guidelines?
It's absolutely ridiculous we're even arguing about this ... rules exist to make the game fair and they apply to EVERYONE. This is not kindergarten where everyone gets a participation ribbon. |

I suspect that fans of any team would be disappointed if the tying goal was disallowed on such a call. But the truth is, the rule is there to eliminate goals scored on offside plays. That's exactly what this call accomplished. |

It's pretty franking simple - I can't believe you dolts are having a hard time grasping the concept.
When a goal is scored on the Leafs, the rule should be administered to a T - I don't care if it takes 30 minutes, make sure the call is correct. If it's a jillionth of a millimeter offside, it's no goal.
When the Leafs score a goal, FFS, we don't need these stupid interruptions. Let the boys play! If the Linesman thought it was on side, we don't need Johnny5 having to confirm it. It's a goal!
P.S. I'm ashamed I used a Johnny5 reference instead of the WOPR.
Go ahead, Howard - I deserve the ban. |

Get rid of offsides altogether....Frank it! If the league wants more goals, you'll get them this way! Who gives a poop if the guy without the puck crosses the blue line before the puck carrier! When I used to play NHL 94 on my Super Nintendo, I always turned the offside option off! - NewfieStud

Better idea: just go back to the old rule where the linesman makes the call with his eyes like a human and forget all the video replay.
I think they should take it out completely, even for goals. No replays. Ever. For anything. - James_Tanner
So, you are for modern analytics to help teams understand the games and players. But, you are against modern technology to correct officiating mistakes.
Where do you stand on curved sticks, helmets?
It’s 2019, come join us. The technology works. It fixes mistakes.
I suppose you liked it when the Detroit Tiger pitcher lost a perfect game because of a blown call?
How about when the STL Cardinals were robbed of a World Series because of a botched call.
Do I even have to bring up last weekend’s NFC Championship game.
Offsides is not a judgement call. ‘Close enough’ is not good enough.

I actually agree with tanner on this.if an off side is seen and called in real time then great. Do away with the super slow mo offside reviews |

I'm sure a lot of New Orleans Saints fans would have loved a video review last Sunday.

Offside is offside and whistle should have gone stopping the play before they played the 30 seconds. There is lots of ways to increase scoring without changing the offside rule. I think the calling a penalty and someone scores so they call off the penalty is away worse rule, that penalty should remain a penalty. I don’t think you should be aloud to ice the puck on the pk and should have to serve the entire penalty, no matter how many goals get scored. This would increase scoring and make PP’s away more interesting. |

Again, this dude doesnt watch hockey. If you havent seen a million examples of guys trying to cheat the offside line every single game you dont watch hockey. The game is so much faster and technical than what it used to be and much harder for linesman to make the right call as often. The rule wasnt made because of one goal 10ft offside. That is just the most exaggerated example of the refs making the wromg call. The rule was made because offside goals were being scored too often. Again, if you watched hockey you'd realize how important crossing/defending the other team from crossing the blueline is. Zone entry has become the most difficult thing to do other than score goals, and even that might be easier this year. We want to promote a speed/skill game. Its what is fun to watch. It also makes it very hard to judge when these guys can skate as fast as a pass. |
