I think we all know now that Gardiner isn't getting his big payday. Does anyone object to a short - maybe two or three year deal for similar money?

He'll get a bump in salary to 5.25 mil x 3
become ufa when he's 32?

I can't see it now that I started to look at it. he's doing his last contract
he'll want at least 6 to 8 yrs @ 6 mil per ...

You think if Dubas hadn't said anything the Nylander scenario would have played out any differently?

Also, he was absolutely correct in his assessment. They could and they did.

It's his job to handle the media and exude confidence. I don't see how any of it is "unneccessary" as it almost certainly has little bearing on how negotiations between agents and players play out - it's simple media bites that satisfy the fans and sports pundits.

- mjones242

Great - our opinions differ. I don’t disagree with a lot of what you said, but Dubas himself today said he’s looking to have Matthews under contract by the deadline so he has a better handle on team budget next year; yes - I 100% think the Nylander media circus could have been tamped down. The reality in the Toronto market is that the media latches on to poop like this and turns what should be a bit story into a sideshow and yes, that creates unnecessary pressure for the players . As I mentioned - loves Dubas - but I’d prefer a happy median between owhard Brian’s Burke and government spy Uncle Lou.

Why? He signed NYlander.

And why would the poop hit the fan if he's not signed by the trade deadline? No RFAs are signed by anyone.

- RogerRoeper

Then why say anything? I assume you’re either from Toronto or aware of the media circus anything Leafs is. Focus on the task of signing the guy - not giving sound bites you’ll have to answer to in 5 weeks when you should be focussed on making your team better.

You should route for a different team...you are not a true Leaf fan

You probably think you posted this on a websight too...another genius.

I think it's a distraction from the team as they had a lousy January so far.

That’s totally fair. Could have left it at “talks are progressing well” without the deadline shpeel IMO.

I think he knows where he's at in the negotiations. Other than a couple of small things perhaps the deal has been decided.

I'm going to give Nylander until the end of next season to earn that contract he signed. If he Gomez's us I'll be very disappointed.

This is obviously a guess but I don't see Mathews signing for less than JT. I also don't see him making more than McDavid. Would twelve satisfy the Mathews camp? With Nylander struggling so badly his trade value has not increased. His negotiations did not help his cause. Mathews signing a deal sooner rather than later would help the whole team stay focused. I'd let Jake walk. Let Edmonton overpay him just as Ferland will be overpaid. Not worth it.

Great - why timebox himself then? Would anyone have been mad if he sprung the signing on us today out of nowhere? Again - I like Dubas and what’s he’s done and is doing for the club the vast majority of the time. - but don’t think at his age in the role he’s in a little ego doesn’t creep up from time to time.

According to Capfriendly, Leafs have about $39.1M in cap space for 2019-20. They have 10 players signed.

RFA forwards
Matthews
Marner
Kapanen
Johnsson

RFA D-men
Ozhiganov

It’ll be tight rope act no question but I think Dubas & Co can get them all signed and have some left to make some UFA signings if that in fact is the plan. However, I think all signs point to a big trade
