Leafs hire former players as team ambassadors.. Marner and Matthews will still get paid long after they retire from hockey.
- PatC80

not sure that plays into it at all

poop i could work 30 years making 75k every year and thats only 2+ mil

hell of a lot of money to be fine without

Matthews and Marner could take a $1m cut in there 1st contract over 8 years and still live like kings for the rest of their lives. Plus they still get the bonus of TO marketing to make more on the side.

Nylander should have taken a little less and signed in Sept too.

I highly doubt the Leafs only pay their team ambassadors 75k..

Mark Masters

Leafs PP units at skate

Rielly
Matthews-Kadri-Marner
Tavares

Gardiner
Moore-Kapanen-Nylander
Marleau

That 2nd pp unit is ugly. They might as well keep the top unit out there the whole time.

If Moore is back up, then Johnsson must be out for a bit

Hopefully he mostly fakes the shot and bounces a pass off someone into the net.

I'm still baffled they fired him ONE DAY after he gives his backup goaltender 4.5M per year.

I mean... they needed him to do that one last mistake before he left?

- Scabeh

I always assumed ownership needed to sign off on contracts, so if Chiarelli came up and said "I'm going to sign Koskinen to 4.5 mil a season because I think that's a good idea", Katz should have said "No. And you're fired."

Really easy to say when you're not the person being asked to leave $8,000,000 USD on the table.

Fun Fact from your Friendly Manitoban,

Today in 1902, Winnipeg Victorias sweep Toronto Wellingtons in 2 games to win the Stanley Cup.

- Ross77

Makes sense. The Victorias GM suited up some large mosquitoes and the Toronto players wouldn't go near them.

Not as hard when you're getting $88m and other endorsements, plus you get to play on a little better team....of course it's easy sitting here when I wouldn't make that over 10,000 lifetimes.

Indeed.

I'll never blame a player for getting as much as he can.

NHL careers can be so short, get the most out of it.

This being said, if you're getting paid 7M per year, you better be ready to live up with the expectations that come with it.

Not sure how accurate this is because I don’t have 30 million in the bank but one guy I heard on the radio who was worth close to a billion said 30 million was around the cut off.
He basiacally said you have everything you want and could ever need with 30 million. He basically said you just become more money hungry the more you get. Everything revolves around money and you end up not enjoying what you have.

The 26 richest people have more than the bottom half of the entire human race, that says it all. Gotta have just a bit more. Just a bit more.

Oh for sure.. I'm not saying that they shouldn't get paid.. I'm saying that they should be happy with $1M less per year. Instead of 12M getting 11M

Well once you start making a lot of money, you become accustomed to a certain lifestyle and if you are an NHL player you work from age 20-35, you then have 30-40 years to live when you retire.

8 million extra dollars is not a small amount of money

- senstroll

If you're retired and living as if you're getting $50,000 a week in income then you've got a poopty financial advisor. (To be fair plenty of players are broke after playing and in one case bankrupt while playing).

In addition dont forget they would also qualify for the player pension as they got older.

If you bought your house/cottage and any toys you really wanted youd be fine without the extra 8 million. (Again easy for me to say as I dont make millions a year).

Endorsements aren't really a guarentee. Seems like an eternal probability for those two in particular, though.

Someone here posted an article which stated that players only bring home ~$300,000 from every $1,000,000 there contract is worth. I can't in good conscience feel sympathy because of that, $300,000 a year is still an outstanding salary when compared to the average. But that might have an impact on the money you're willing to leave on the table.

In other news is Trotz the early favourite for the jack Adam's or Gallant? I think it would be between those two.

I can't see them only making 30%...but maybe....I do see both sides.

But make $100-$150 million over a life time is pretty rich and if you need to leave a bit for the other guys on the team you have to think about it.

I guess we have the perfect scenario to watch over the next decade, hopefully we see some long playoff runs and the boys all make good money.
