What I keep hearing is that Marner's camp want to be second to Matthews for the comparison. If Matthews signs for say 12.5 then Marner can come in and say he's worth 10. If Matthews signs for 11, Marner can't really say he's worth 12. (Well he can but not likely to get it.)

Personally, I'm not sure I understand everyone here. I get making money because your career is relatively short. However, how does a player always say "I like it here and want to play/win here but let's handcuff the team from helping us do that."

I think most players would take discounts if they could be guaranteed that their team would be a cup contender throughout their contract and that they wouldn't be traded. I'd go for max money myself 100% because of that uncertainty.

Well the Leafs can guarantee they spend to the cap if it makes sense for the team. Look at the Islanders and the entire time Snakevares was there. They never addressed the needs really and tried to build a team on the cheap.

He basiacally said you have everything you want and could ever need with 30 million. He basically said you just become more money hungry the more you get. Everything revolves around money and you end up not enjoying what you have.

Exactly, Marner has a deal with Intact Insurance, Nylander has one with Sonnet.. Matthews has a deal with ScotiaBank and Porsche..

They make money from other sources
