Keith Gretzky is interim GM - VANTEL
He's been Director of Amateur Scouting for the Coyotes and Bruins, maybe he'll help in the drafting department? |

Lucic, Spooner, Russell, Talbot and Koskinen all ridiculously overpaid. Hall for Larsssen is the worst trade ever. Ebrule. How did it go on for this long? |

Joe Sakic went through the same thing with Quebec, they sucked goat balls for his first six years in the league. His first year in the league was 88/89, they finished last, they went on to finish last the next two years as well.
His first six years in the league they were poop until they built up enough assets to start making trades, that's when the success started. - LeftCoaster
So the Oil just need a few more 1OA picks?
They need a new scouting dept.

Someone posted this in the Oilers blog:
Scott Wheeler
@scottcwheeler
Keith Gretzky’s list of accomplishments:
- Bragging about taking Trent Frederic with a first rounder even though he said he was a bottom-six guy
- Taking Zboril, DeBrusk, Senyshyn with the three picks preceding Barzal, Connor, Chabot
- Overseeing four attrocious drafts in Phoenix
In seven NHL drafts as a director of amateur scouting between two organizations, he basically has the Pastrnak pick to hang his hat on and little else. OEL I suppose, but that was sixth overall. This is a guy who took Gormley 14th, Murphy 20th, Visentin 27th.
So, I doubt it. |

The search for a new GM in Edmonton begins immediately. Expect to hear names like Gillis, Hunter, McCrimmon, Futa and Hextall on the list. - VanHockeyGuy
Gilles's would actually be a good gm for them. He knows how to take a team with good players, gut their prospects and futures and sign good contracts with many NMC.
If hired I see a cup final appearance followed by rapid downfall.
Honestly I think he'd be better then the rest of them. |

I don't think they're far enough along to have someone like Gillis in there. They would actually need to be a solid playoff team first, then he could make all those moves to gut the future and bring them up a bit |

The NHL should change the way they do the draft. Instead of rewarding the inept, terrible teams with the (potentially) best young players, they should reward the teams who do a really great job. Win the cup, get the first overall selection. |

It must be so stressful for him, knowing that his failure as team captain will get three coaches and a general manager fired in three years. |

Nah, whoever is the closest to the playoff spot (but misses) should be first overall...it will encourage intense and exciting hockey down the stretch by all teams |

Ok, I could be on board with that.
So 17 to 31 (selections 1-15) then 8 teams who lose the first round, then 4 teams who lose second round, then 2 teams who lose conference finals then runner up and champ? |

You'd have teams legit "tanking" out of 16th place to get 17th place in that situation.
Would get to the point you'd see a 10th place team try and tank their way downwards and all of a sudden you have the NBA where only 5 teams are trying to actually win. |
