With all those great picks they could have done anything that wanted. Instead they (frank)ed it up.
I honestly believe that when you manage a team by committee you get the oilers of today. What a mess. - bloatedmosquito
They brought in a guy who ran hockey Canada ....and that’s essentially what they do for every international tournament ....except they don’t have their pick of all the best players in the world ....

That’s the truth
I think they waited too long to finally trade for a D man that they put themselves in a corner and made the wrong trade ....then bad signings....and mcdavid has just masked their problems to a point - Redmile247
It's a big difference when your manager comes out at the beginning of the season and says he doesn't expect your team to be a playoff team, like Jim Benning did this season, and when your fans (Edmonton) expect you to build on the 100 point season you had two years ago and you've got the best player on the game on your team.
The Oilers and the Canucks are simply three player teams right now but our goaltending has been better than theirs, we have 24 wins they have 23. Expectations are simply different between the two franchises. |

It looks as though they're going to have to start over again for the third time in the last twelve years
They should hire Hextall, the guy is a master at building through the draft - LeftCoaster
Hextall with Edmonton’s ever growing cabal of meddlers. That’d be fun. |

All those high picks in round after round, year after year and they still have a really odd mix of skill type.

Joe Sakic went through the same thing with Quebec, they sucked goat balls for his first six years in the league. His first year in the league was 88/89, they finished last, they went on to finish last the next two years as well.
His first six years in the league they were poop until they built up enough assets to start making trades, that's when the success started. |

TBH, I don’t like the comparison between the two teams. They are at different points in their cycle. There’s some bad mojo in Edmonton right now and it’s got the players in a funk. I still think the oilers are stocked with more talent it’s just the chemistry is all wrong. |

I was shook when they got McJesus but it's amazing how Chia has somehow made them an even bigger laughing stock.
A good GM hired before the TDL or draft can turn them around 2 or 3 years as long as Lowe and co don't start interfering.
McJesus and Drai are still 2 great building blocks and really young. |

Pat Roy sure helped that and some guy named Forsberg
and it was 1 asset that changed their future |

when you have to rebuild your strategy just to meet the criteria of a tank, you know you’re in trouble. |

That's the perception that I think people are getting wrong, because of expectations. They're really not in a different cycle if you consider they had to hit the reset button when Chiarelli came in four years ago.
Hard to ignore their time before him though. |

You missed the point entirely, I'm guessing, just because McDavid has to suffer through some bad seasons, three and a half to be exact, doesn't mean he should bail.
Sakic went through six years of poop before they got better, Yzerman was 30 when he won his first Cup. |

This TDL could be pretty fun with some of the hot seat/desperate GM's around the league.
Chia, Blake, Tallon, Murray, Nill, Dorion and Armstrong are all under pressure and scrutiny right now. |

(frank) it just name Gretzky your GM and everyone in edm will be in the glory of 99 and 97....it will take at least 2-3 years before oil fans realize he didn’t make a single trade |

As Nucker just said, they just need the right person in charge to turn their fate around. Some great young players to build around!
McDavid - 21 yrs old
Draisaitl - 23 yrs old
RNH - 25 yrs old
Nurse - 23 yrs old
Klefbom - 25 yrs old (always injured) |

I heard that in preparation of getting fired chia has reached out the Benning ...JB would be able to do more of his world class scouting if he had an old friend from his bruins days to keep the ship on course |

they really should just blow up the entire front office....advisors, managers, scouts, etc and hire a smart hockey ops president and let him start from scratch by hiring who he thinks are the best hockey minds and not here everyone who played for the glory day Oilers.
It's not possible though, apparently Katz and Lowe are good friends according to Oilers fans |

Yup...
A lot of the issues fall on Katz for being a fan and not an owner, if you know what I mean. He's got a failing business, and he needs to realize that, it's a business not a toy. |
