I mean sure, if you want to use the logic that anyone can hit on late round picks, you can make the case that any team at any point in time is only a couple years away from being Cup contenders. We're deal with probabilities here, not certainties. The probably that the Oilers will be able to draft a #1 D and the top 6 winger talent to seriously compete for a Cup with low round picks is laughably low.

Did you see my other post about who the Pens drafted ( or signed) after 2009 cup?

Yeah and I think the only difference maker for the Oilers would have been Guentzel who's a legitimate 1st line scoring wing. Dumoulin and Maatta are both complimentary blue liners that are as good as their partner. The Oilers have those dudes already. Rust, Sheary, and Simon are good players, but like the blue liners, they're complimentary pieces. If the Oilers were to draft Dumoulin, Maatta, Rust, Sheary, and Simon this draft, they'd probably be better moving forward, but not in the realm of serious Cup contention still.

Schultz is not a #1D or even a 2D on any good team. The fact that he stepped up in Letangs absence and kept his head above water is admirable, but that doesn't mean Letang is expendable or playoff runs can be consistently made without someone of Letang's caliber. its a fluke and not something that should be used as procedure going forward.
- DeflatedPucks

Yup, I definitely already said (admit) that it was a fluke. Who’s to say Klefbom won’t develop into a true #1 defender? It could happen. Before Klefbom went down Edmonton was comfortably in a playoff spot. He’s coming back and honestly, the Oilers could trade for Maroon and Panik and go on a bit of a run. Crazier things have happened. Talbot for Maroon and then the Blues trade Allen tooooo... Philly? Boston?

I agree but then theres trades like Scuds for Daley or Perron for Hagelin.

I'll just go back to my statement that its not that far fetched to me that further down the road the Oil get a cup with McDavid.

oh i didn't even realize this thread was making comparisons between the pens and oil. yeah ive always like klefbom, but injuries and poopty d partners have left question marks on pretty much all of them: klef, nurse.

its pretty sad how Maroon was probably Chia's greatest trade as oilers GM and then the dude dumps him at the TDL. And now he should get him back lol

Its not inconceivable. He's 22. Assuming they pretty much start from scratch and keep only the few pieces of value, it might be 4-5 years before a contending team can be built. And they still have some prospects who they haven't completely ruined who may develop in that time: bouchard, yamamoto.

But it starts with mgmt realizing the playoff run of yesterday is way in the past. This is a bottom 10 club.

I don’t think anyone’s saying he won’t. It’s that the Oilers are continuing to head in the wrong direction with no signs of changing their way of thinking.

This will continue to make it harder to build a competitive team around him.

Any cup run requires a degree of luck. From bounces to calls to injuries, either no injuries to your team or key guys missing from other team (ie Stamkos and Stralman missing most of ECF in 2016). The 2017 cup just had a F ton of luck involved....but they did go into with the bad luck of no Letang.

Sports. Crazy things can happen and they're unpredictable a lot.

They very well could but there is little to no chance they are ever a dominant team.

I was getting the impression some people thought that here and even RW said in the blog he should request a trade.

Yeah that’s a great point about him getting dealt. I forgot about that. Just such poor asset management. It is so hard to try and understand why he’s stil the GM of this team. Imagine if they had gotten Botts instead of Buffalo

I was getting the same impression which is why I quickly made some hypothetical 2020 Oilers squad which nobody took the time to comment on. Nbd. I’ll just pop some more Vicodin and be on my merry way

Sad side story: I’ve been away from the office after having my wisdom teeth pulled and one of our hockey players wanted to talk to me about his loans and I can’t because my condition got worse so I’m home for the day

Careful of those pain meds man. I know quite a few people who's lives spiraled down the sh!tter after being prescribed them.

I appreciate the note but addiction isn’t my concern. The surgery was on Thursday and I’m still in a ton of pain. I actually hate the way they make me feel which is nauseous and backed up

Personally I think it’s funny McDavid’s team is (frank)ed. However the fact that the stats community are the ones that mainly point it out means they will probably be s contender next year.

Pain meds haven’t been in my family history but hard drugs have been. I do well to learn from others. I’m very much looking forward to life without pain or drugs. It’s been 5 days now without the gym and mostly without work and it’s been pretty boring. I’ve got goals to strive for and a team to coach as soon as I’m feeling better. Until then, the hockey banter (even about other teams) is extremely welcome

Beer and weed can make me unconscious just fine. Just say no to drugs is my moto. Except a little lsd, ecstasy every now and then. Maybe a little blow. But mostly drug free.

Wisdom teeth and it was on Thursday?
- Feds91Stammer

Yeah. I’m 29 and I wasn’t having any pain from them impacting my molars so I never noticed. Turns out my bottom left was coming in completely sideways. The surgeon said my wisdom teeth are absolutely huge and he said post surgery that my jaw bone is incredibly dense. He said he expected me to be sidelined for at least a week. I lift every day so when I was still drugged up and the doc told me I wouldn’t be able to work out for at least a week my roommate described my facial expression as “shocked and depressed” haha
Anywho, he said there was a 1% chance I would never feel my jaw again (which I can, it’s fine) and that there’s also a small chance that my body doesn’t fill in the gap with calcium. Apparently the older you are the higher % chance you have at further infection as well. A friend of mine just hadn’t hers out in December and she’s had nonstop infections after so that makes me a bit nervous. Surgery was at 10am on Thursday and I’m still bleeding once in a while and the pain meds wear off every 2-3 hours even though they say 4-6

Absolutely not.

The Pens had Sid, Geno, Letang with Kunitz, Neal, Maatta as a very very good supporting cast still on the roster.

Oilers have McDavid, Drai, RNH, no elite defenseman, no supporting cast.

While Sid and McDavid are probably considered a wash (personalliy I think McDavid is better), I think Drai has played the majority of his season on the wing with McDavid, so their 2nd line C is RNH, who is good but not Geno good.

I don't think the argument is even close in comparison.

"While Sid and McDavid are probably considered a wash (personalliy I think McDavid is better)" While I do agree Mcdavid now is better than Sid now are you saying that you ALSO think Mcdavid is better than sid was at the same age?

That is crazy. I think I had mine out when I was 20 cause they were coming in sideways as well. It sucked but you definitely are having a rough go with it.

My opinion, points wise they are a wash at the same age but McDavid has been the better all around player at the same age.
