How would you know if players sign based on taxes?

It's brought up all the time.

Probably only the player and the agent KNOW. But the whole academic study of economics is based on this sort of "guessing"

It makes sense to think that these Tampa contracts are lower than they could get elsewhere bc they don’t have to pay state income tax

TSN had a “calculator” for Tavares where u could type in the salary & compare how much he’d get in real dollars based on the taxes for each city

Sure, i guess

Rattie has 2 goals in 29games this year
I wouldn’t expect much help

Such a highly touted Juniors player,
but he’s just never been able to do much in the NHL

Maybe he was just faking being a bad player to get out of Edmonton

The “trade Risto” scenario is interesting
But if it’s for a forward,
then we better have a plan for bringing in another RH defenseman
Can’t go with just Bogo & Nelson

Im wondering how long before the Sabres move Dahlin to the right side, epecially given the number of LhD combined with Bogo's expiring contract next year. Seems like a natural thing to do is to move him to the right side eventually.

Dahlin?
Yeah, that’s certainly an option

My current concern with that is how it would split up him & Bogo
Bogo has looked pretty solid this year,
but he’s been playing with Dahlin
I wonder if splitting them up hurts Bogo’s play?

And we do have Borgen, Dougherty & Laaksonen as RH defensemen that are coming
But idk that any of them will be ready for top4 minutes soon?

Seems like a move for Dahlin to the right side might be a couple years away

We weren't discussing economics.

I wasn't even discussing hockey with him.

He came in and made a statement as if it was a fact.

When it was an opinion. Much like my opinion :that I was discussing with a different poster.

Unless they're playing 41 games in a tax-free state like Nevada, Texas, Tennessee, or Florida, NYS is one of the highest taxed with 8.82% top nominal rate, and then the city tacks on another couple percent.

So call it 12% for Rangers, Isles and Devils players who live in NY, but that's only half the time, the other half the time it's whatever state and city they're playing in. It's definitely a difference, 2 or 3% on $6M is a good deal of money, but it should be no one's top 5 choices of where to play.

I don't know enough about Canadian taxes to know how much they are, but it might come into play more between playing for a Canadian team and an American one.

Cost of living would have a much bigger impact than state/city taxes would.
