One point away from winning the pole position for the Hughs sweepstakes! But a lot can happen before the season ends for the other 30 teams.
Here's an Eklund like rumor: Hawks trade their 2019 1st rounder to Vancouver for Demko, Virtanen, and the Vancouver 1st rounder in 2019, 2nd rounder in 2020.

Hmmm, I don't like that. It's messing with the Hockey Gods and tempting fate. It likely happens now. Wish you would have swapped out Petterson or Horvat for Demko...or both, and given the Hawks a few more of the Nucks 1st rounders with Seabs headed home. |

If Chicago happens to win the draft lottery and gets the #1 pick, is Hughes the #1 pick?
I know a top center is a must, but how can you leave Kaapo Kakko on the board for the next team?
I say, give Toews the LW he has been needing for years.
Edit - I thought KK was a LW......my bad....take the center. |

Doesn't Toews need a RW too or actually even moreso? If (likely) the Hawks do get one of the top 2 to 3 picks, I'd kind of like to see them take the Finn.
C > W, but I'd rather see them take a guy with some size and skill. |

If Hawks draft #1 they will take Hughes - you can take that to the bank!

Wonder if Gus could play wing?
Might be worth a shot, since he plays well with Kane, and there are a few D prospects.
If the plan is to lose for Hughes, why not try it for a few games. |

Speaking of Kane, he is quietly moving up the ladder on the all-time scorers list. He won't make it to the top 100 this season, but he will be close. He also will be on the fringe of top 10 U.S. born players. Just a fantastic career so far. If he can stay healthy, he has a real shot to eventually pass Brett Hull for #1 US born scorer.

There was an article in The Atheletic early in the season about the Blues playing man on man. A few ex-pros criticized its use as antiquated in the current NHL. I think they started using it primarily against the Hawks bc of the Hawks movement. But there was a lot of video showing how man on man fails even with good skaters. The argument was good and the proof seems undeniable. Man on man defensively is hard to maintain and you get tired skaters who have no energy for offense unless they create turnovers and regain possession immediately. Then you have to transition quickly and where are the players' positioned in order to break out?
To be able to play that style positions have to be fluid. Defenders have to be able to become forwards, vice versa and wingers comfortable on their off wings or suddenly being centers. Which isn't a problem from center ice in on the offensive side. Players have issues with this on the defensive side.
Man on man is something I think can only be used in spots in a game but not an over arching system in todays NHL. The way you defend forces you to chase and if you chase the play or cone against players even half way as good as Kane you will lose coverage and/or take a penalty. |

Exnay on that other one. Who needs that crap? If we could draft a brick wall, then we draft it. It would take up less cap than Seabs, and stay up too. |

Man on man, that sounds "toit like a toiger." -Goldmember.
All kidding aside, thanks for the explanation and breakdown. Appreciate it. When you say, use it in spots of a game, would that be when a team has the lead, and just plays shutdown? I can see why teams relax it's usage. |

The other day some posters were critsizing the coaching staff for moving defensemen to their opposite side. I suggested that to play a fluid, Soviet style and to use man on man defense then all players had to be able to play in any position. I wonder if Coliton is going to try to play like the old Soviet Red Machine?

Colliton could bring in Coach Viktor Tikhonov to run the defence. Wonder how long he would put up with Erik G? |

If that's what his plan is it would be an almost impossible to scout because there are no real patterns to the play. Tikhonov coached the best of the best Soviet players who all thought the game at a high level. But like you say it needs players with very high hockey IQs and Gus along with others wouldn't be able to play that style. They'd be running into everything and anything.
BTW I think Tikhonov may be dead? Are you suggesting Coliton couldn't outcoach Tikhonov in the current state he is in?? |
