Ultimately, it's up to the player. That's my point.

This is sooooooo true. Players making big $$$ should be able to self motivate.

I don’t want to trade Ghost and I know he was great for us 5V5 last year, but say this 5 forward PP unit gets it going and actually sticks. Does this decrease Ghost’s value / impact for our team? When you take him away from the PP does he become more expendable for a trade? Again, I don’t want to trade Ghost, just curious and having a lil discussion.

Not going to be an issue. A couple goals against on this pp setup and they'll go back to a more traditional mix.

Again, I'll ask you how many times do you need to get burnt but this type of response? You don't have a point here other than needing to be advesarial. What is so horrible about stating that a coach can take a player aside and talk to him about his game but ultimately the player has to respond? Tell me what's going to happen when JvR goes cold again, which will inevitably happen? Will the results of the talk have worn off? Is there an expiration date on them? Coaches always talk to players and coach players as individuals. It doesn't always have a positive effect. I'm sure Gordon has talked to a lot of player about a lot of things but we just came off of an 8 game losing streak.

I think his point is JVR was struggling and trying to do too much. Gordon sat down and went over his game with him and JVR took what was told to him onto the ice. that's something that has come under question to whether Hakstol communicated like that to his players. I don't know, I am not in the locker room to see how he coaches and my focus is not on the bench to see if Hakstol ever communicated to his players, all I can go by are the players comments that imply he didn't.

Things really haven't gotten better so I think its safe to say the majority of the issues fall on the players.

It was nice to see the game Patrick played. While the Flyers needed that, HE really needed that. I really hope he can build on that. when the wild pulled the goalie I was really hoping Patrick would get the hatty.

What would you point our PP struggles to? inviduals not executing? Not finishing chances? And I agree about Giroux in the new PP set up. I wasn’t a fan of him on that side and prefer his right hand shot on the left side/wall.
- arichardson22

Lack of execution and resulting drain on confidence. Players such as Gostisbehere are hesitant and thinking about what they're going to do instead of reacting and playing.

Why have coaches at all, why not just players? They clearly serve no purpose.

Not sure why anyone thinks that I don't understand that Gordon had a talk with JvR. Pretty simple to understand. My point and focus is on what happens from that point on. I was also anticipating that this would eventually move towards criticizing Hakstol.

Sometimes the player can't get out of his own way and the coach needs to help that along.
- dragonoffrost

For sure but even after that talk, the player then needs to get out of his own way.

Nope, MJL said otherwise. Might as well have been signed, sealed, and delivered from God himself. 2019 Flyers will move on with no coach moving forward, they are no help.

All we are saying is that they had a talk, Gordon made some good points, JVR applied it to his game and was productive. Doesn't mean he is going to be the best player every game. He was in a funk and got some help from his coach. Sometimes when a player is struggling it's tough to see the issue. Regarding Hak and JVR, don't think it's applicable, played two games, missed a bunch, then was trying to get back up to speed (probably still was when Gordon took over).

Go Flyers..

Watched what I could of the last period last night and seemed like an entertaining game which is all we can ask for.

They are not doing a anything this season so at least play an entertaining game.

Also, always surprises me how many hockey fans their appear to be out on West Coast. 7 people around me at work are on either official Blizzard Teams or local teams for both ice and inline. Kind of cool to see.

I read the blog. I'll answer the questions myself. I'm a fan of the comments that Gordon makes and his thoughts on the game. It seems to me that he is a good communicator. Ultimately though and it's the same for every coach, the player has to perform on the ice. What ultimately made the difference is JvR's play on the ice.
- MJL

What ultimately made the difference is the coach pointed out what the player was doing wrong and how to fix it, and the player listened because he knows and respects the coach, made the adjustments and its paying off.

Yes and no. You can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink it... sure I'll agree to that. But if you dont lead the horse to water, the horse may never find the water and cant drink again... or maybe he might just wander around until he finds water.... In other words, even pro's need to be coached, and just like in real life sometimes it matters whos saying the words.

Personally, I don't think other teams can figure out your PP to the point of being ineffective due to that.

As far as the new PP configuration, I'm not really a fan of it. First of all, Giroux is on the wrong side of the ice. His angle for both passing and shooting has been changed. Couturier on the other half wall is not a good distributor of the puck on the wall. It basically comes down to Voracek shooting from the top with a double screen. I'm going to keep an open mind though and see how it works.

- MJL

Giroux can play any forward position. Lets not forget he was drafted as a right wing. Might it take a little time to adjust, maybe.

So Jake made some defensive plays last night, so he must of stopped trying to do too much. Now if Coots can stop trying to do too much, he will be able to pick up his man in the slot. Weal just didn't work out here because he tried to do too much.

It's heart medication time when that group is out there. You know the inevitable is going to occur with it soon. Jake or Coots turnover, no back check, short handed goal against. The question is how many times will it happen before the staff decides it's not worth it.
