Klimchuk we got for Andrew Nielsen, way back in Nov 2018.

Pretty obvious what happened:

Matthews started sulking when he was demoted to the 2nd PP unit.

His buddy Melander then told him, "Do what I do: if they aren't going to give you the respect you deserve, stay off the scoresheet!"

So that's what Matthews is doing.

Of course, the other Leafs players have realized this, and are pissed by the selfishness.

I disagree with you.

I think it would be very silly for the Leafs to waste the last time they have deadline cap space on standing pat.

There are plenty of options available. More than usual...it’s a big UFA year.

There’s really no excuse. They have a big advantage by not having to send salary back or having the other team retain.

I know this isn't directed to me, but I think we absolutely should explore the UFA market.

I just want to hang onto our forward group, particular our top end players, at this stage of the game.

A couple years down the road? Yeah, maybe it's time to retool and ship out Nylander, Kapanen, or Johnsson.

He doesn’t need to. Dermott could slide over or Rielly.

And sure they could be. They likely will cost more however.

They're not sliding over Rielly who is in the middle of a Norris-contending season.

Dermott sliding over does nothing for Gardiner's position in the LHD pecking order - Jake would still be behind Rielly and Muzzin... unless they would try him on the right side (which might be worth a shot).

I think acquiring a 2nd pairing LHD means the Leafs would likely want to move Gardiner to try to shore up missing pieces. But I just don't see it happening as Babs seems pleased with Gards.

Having said that, It'd be nice to see Gardiner* packaged up with a significant prospect (not named Liljegren or Sandin) and perhaps Johnsson for a RHD.

* Yes, he's a UFA. I imagine any trade with him might be contingent on signing with the new club?
