I don't think it's being dropped inasmuch as it's doubling down. Having a good 1PP and a mediocre 2PP means that the opposition traditionally needs to have a focused 1 minute PK - with pressure.

Putting Matthews on the 2PP makes 2 seriously dangerous PP units. Especially as Nylander rounds into form (which open PP ice and the defensive fear of Matthews could do).

You really need to throw in Marner and Nylander, clearly Kapanen, Lilejgren, and a 1st is an underpayment.....

I honestly think he made the wrong change. I think he should have moved Tavares, or Kadri off the first unit.

Tavares has good shot, and could benefit from playing in the high slot, and not right in front of the next and Kadri could benefit from being a more prominent option.

However, if it gets Marner to stop trying the cross seam pass every single play then im all for it.

Matthews has an elite shot by any standard - he's not shooting enough, not getting in a posiition to be able to shoot. JT and Matthews are strong enough to pick up any loose change around the net - Need to have other ways to score. Powerplay has been crap for 2 months. Pucks to the net better than picked off passes and attacks that end up in the corner.

I don't think you can move Tavares from the crease. He's good there. You need a net front presence with good hands and quick reactions. It was the one thing JVR was good at. And he thrived. Tavares is far more dynamic. It adds another dimension to worry about as well.

Removing Kadri from the first unit doesn't help, because it doesn't improve the second unit. I don't think I'm alone here when I say that Kadri has out and out sucked this year. His defensive play is weak, his offensive play is mediocre, and the chances he's getting are forced and/or obvious. The not scoring is in his mind, and its presently affecting his play.

Anyway, because Marner is less of a threat to shoot, having JT in front makes any Marner pass as good as a shot.
