Why is it a problem that and owner wants to win and make money?

It's not a problem if they don't take short cuts.

You can want to win and make money without expediting the process. Quinn has made it clear he wants to turn pro at the end of his season with Michigan, the canucks clearly arent yet a playoff team(doing great things, but not quite there). FA is a business man, and will always want to make money, just like all good businessmen, but to me, stay the course, let quinn finish this year, get a high draft pick again, and do things properly.

As much as I hate saying Minivan is correct ,I don't see too many players on D in three years worth worrying about . Jett Woo won't be eligible nor will Utenen. Protect OJ Hughes and then who gives a flying f*ck about the rest of them.

If Quinn Hughes wanted to play tomorrow I would welcome him with open arms because then I don't need to watch Derrik Pouliot.

Quinn instantly and seamlessly, in my personal opinion, would fit into our top 4. I think our D is that bad, and that he is that good. Having said that, given how much our team struggles when a couple players are out, and that Quinn wouldn't have to be protected if he plays less than 10 games for the Canucks this year, it would just make things much easier if he stuck to his original plan of playing out the year in the NCAA. I agree with you, the thought of being able to watch Quinn Hughes in a Canuck uniform now would be fantastic, but long term, I think it makes the most sense to stick to the plan.

Why waste the option. You never know what a trade might bring back are what happens with free agency this summer and next.
Why piss away that?

The plan is develop players . Do you think Hughes will learn more on Michigan or the Canucks. The guy is ready for pro now . Grab him when you can.

Seriously who are you worried about losing on Canucks D in 3 years from now?

I would sign Edler on a 3 year deal and expose him on his final year.

if our team is competitive by 2021, which all signs point to the team going in that direction, that extra protected spot could be super useful. Quinn would 100% be protected if he became eligible, but like you said above, there is literally so much that could happen in 2 years with the roster, best not to leave it to chance.

I frankly don't want to watch 4/6 of the Canucks defense but not at the needless expense of 1 year because you are bored with the old toys and want your shiny, new one NOW.
That's how the Oilers build teams.

I am pretty sure Edler will be our free agent signing on D and like I just mentioned I have no problem exposing Edler in year 3

If the draft was today, there wouldn't be a single defenseman that I would be worried or whine about losing lol.

What the roster looks like in 3 years though is anyone's guess. I guess I just would rather not leave it up to chance, and would rather make use of the option.

If he can play 9 games without burning his draft protection I would think that is the obvious option. Yes it's 1 year closer to being an RFA but I see that as a non-issue, what matters is whether he's exempt from the expansion draft.

Wouldn't it be an unnecessary risk? So much can change in that time. Say a package deal is presented where we ship out a couple middling players for a Dman that ends up being a solid top 4 D for us, then you're adding one more to the count. If you can keep Hughes protected I'd say definitely do it

According to carol/ryan and their expertise on the cba, he can play 9 games this year (burning 1 year of his elc) but anything more will make him eligible in the expansion draft

I know, that's why I said that's exactly what they should do is play him for 9

I think the D in three years will look like Edler Hughes OJ Woo Utenen and someone else. Like I said I have no problem exposing 36 year old Edler

He'd be a good winger for Pettersson, but there's less hated guys you could bring into that role

I’m just glad we’ve gotten past the point of being stressed over Sbisa getting claimed and protecting Granlund

I was just laughing at that myself. I remembered the distraught and panic in the years we had before losing Sbisa . I see the same grief leading up to losing Biega or Stecher.
