And what is a "regular player" anyways? In a league where all kinds of players are expected to fill completely different roles you can't really come up with a universal average.

thats the flaw of the stat too many variables. im not sure the forumla they use to determine replacement level but basically whatever those fringe nhlers are is the standard and everyone is measured against them

those hero charts with corsi and stuff were probably the basis of the war stat since they had similar benchmarks for 1st to 4th line players

Is that what we think of the way Michigan is developing 2 of Van's prospects?

If you have what it takes to be a real NHL player, you won't let your emotions get in the way of achieving that

also, if you have what it takes to learn/develop/produce in the AHL, you won't have to leave for more ice time.

Some players develop slower than others, I'd give him another look next year and if he's not able to take a spot in Utica get rid of him

I don't know if i'd say (frank) feelings. Feelings can be a motivator to get better, ex: DiPietro after getting cut from team Canada last year

i agree that some take longer, but its not as though Palmu didn't get an opportunity. He obviously wasn't up to the coaches standards of how they want him to play/learn. I say him going back to Finland, learning there, and trying out again for Utica next year is a good thing. I just hate how this is made into a bigger deal than it has to be. Kid was sh|tting the bed and wasn't playing cause he didn't deserve it, not really out of the norm.

He wasnt good enough, theres only so many spots in Utica and they make everyone earn it.

I think some people here feel every drafted player should make the NHL. If they can't make the AHL then chances are you probably won't see them in the NHL.

I'm not really invested in what happens with Palmu, it's not like the odds aren't astronomical that he'd ever play in the NHL.

Like I said earlier, what is potentially concerning about it is that the coaching staff in Utica didn't effectively communicate what was expected of him. Could be a one off of course, but I don't like the idea of that happening with a high potential 1st or 2nd round pick.

rooting for them all, 12 games in the ahl didn't sound like much of an opportunity but if he looked out of place for most of it then what can you do. as always, it is up to the player to show they deserve to play. hope he works on skating or whatever
