It got away from them in the 3rd but it’s been a fun game to watch but I agree about how good they are......I’m preferring the world jrs over the Oilers these days......the USA vs Sweden game last night was nuts

Maybe Chiarelli meant to trade for Davidson and (frank)ed up and got the wrong Brandon?

Joking aside he sees that the season is going to poop so he decides to trade players for lesser value. I don't understand that.

They got rid of a contract they immediately regretted signing. Caggiula has to chip in a tiny bit or just not actively hurt them and they’re happy
- HB77

Caggiula was actively hurting us so I'd argue the same goes in reverse- just with an added 750k in cap impact.

To further prove your point from yesterday when we talked about how people will criticize Benning for his mistakes but Caggiula gets a pass.....talked to some Oilers fans and although they complained about his deal when he signed it he became a national treasure when he was traded....Manning wasn’t the best way to go obviously but still

Cagiula is one of the worst defensive players I've seen in a very long time and now Yamamoto will get his spot.

Garrison can't win a board battle and loses his man in the slot almost every time.

Manning is a professional player who tries (tried?) to use his words to intimidate (see Zach Kassian...MUCH worse). I would bet you a dollar that he is a gamer and will become a favourite.

I am not familiar with the other player, but young prospects aren't always bad.

To me, none of these players matter and I don't see what all of the fuss is over. Obviously what they had was not working and this is a move initiated by an experienced coach. i.e. "get me some f....ng D now!" and "get this fly-by boy Drake idiot off of my team"

Wideman cost them a 5th.... Petro cost them wideman and a 3rd... meh, no big deal.

Jewels was meh, a decent 3rd liner on the Oilers. But bringing in Manning is inexcusable. If I was at the next game he is involved in I boo relentlessly everytime the puck is near him, let alone when he touches it. Maybe Connor can excuse the past but as a fan who pays to attend 10-20-30 games with the expectations of seeing the most entertaining guy in the game and I missed that guy because of manning and he acted like he intentionally did it, true or not, I do not welcome into my home arena. And relentless booing by home fans may actually teach ownership that actions like this will not be accepted by the fan base and may actually get the wheels turning on a chia gassing. Do we actually have to go as far as Islander fans and put up signs on the streets? This is getting ridiculous.

I think it's a decent trade. Ownership, Manning, McDavid are all professionals that realize that on ice battles get ugly sometimes. They don't care about your feewings. (I hated Manning 2 days ago too...but now he is on my side).

I guess the worst way to get back at Manning for what he did to McDavid is to have Peter C be his new general manager.

no one would question your loyalty as a die-hard fan if you didn't 100% agree with every move that PC does. This move screams of a GM who is trying his best to salvage his job. I honestly cant imagine needing the permission of my generational talent captain to acquire a 7th/8th D man who intentionally injured the best player in a game, just to try and keep his job.

I don't 100% agree with this move...but as I said, it's probably worth a try. I think Manning could be a decent 3rd paring guy, MUCH better than Garrison or Wideman. Cagiula is completely expendable in my opinion.

In the end, this move really doesn't mean much and I personally wouldn't have made it due to the McDavid/Manning factor. On paper I think the Oilers win the trade, and that's probably why the GM asked McDavid what he thought.

I see an awful lot of emotions being thrown around and I honestly think the players don't care...they will just play, like they always do.

the ONLY thing I can objectively say from all of this is this just seems to be moves to shake things up. You are moving marginal/fringe NHL defenders (garrison and wideman) and marginal/fringe NHL forward (cagguila) for marginal NHL defenders Manning/Petrovic. Having said all of that, you gave up the better of your 3rd round picks to acquire 7th/8th pairing Dmen. It just screams of a GM being desperate and it does nothing for your future. If Petrovic and Manning were acquired for "grit", then what are Kassian/Khaira/Lucic there for? If you wanted to be more mobile from the back end, you got worse. On paper, or analytically, you got worse by spending more. Not trying to troll, being completely objective, but this move in my personal opinion was completely idiotic on PC's part.

yeah, I think you are 100% correct, but there have been some injuries that need to be addresed in the short term and I also think Hitchcock has told the GM about a few players that he won't play. I honestly have never seen Manning or Petrovic play, that I can recall, but maybe they'll play better D for Hitch. I'm not pounding the table saying "what a great move", just trying to be a voice of reason in a VERY emotional chat board. I'd be Manning comes out as the best player in the trade. I don't like what he did to McDavid, but I DO like that he showed emotion like that. Not every player in the league blows kisses to the opposing players in a scrum. haha

I think EDM fans have every reason to be emotional about this. As a Canuck fan, i would try and relate this to the Canucks immediately obtaining Mike Matheson, or going out at getting Duncan Keith after he concussed Daniel Sedin. Matheson being a better comparable because he isn't a good defender, and back when Keith elbowed Sedin, he was a much better defender than what he is now. Either way, the losses from an oiler perspective is essentially a higher 3rd round pick. I still think Wideman is a better overall NHL defenseman in all aspects of the position than both Petrovic and Manning, but thats just my personal opinion.
