If they really want Simmonds and either goalie, they could sign them this summer as UFAs...unless they consider themselves legit Cup contenders right now, which I doubt.

Why not? They have one of the top D in the league. They have a lot of good forwards. One thing they lack is a stable goalie. Mrazek is garbage. McBackup provides a good game now and then.

In this trade they would agree to terms with Simmonds which would be an addition for their already good forward group and can do what he has done here on the PP in the past and they get an upgrade in goal. Elliott would likely need to be the one going back but he has to be healthy first. They also get rid of Darling in the deal keeping only 1 mill fo his contract.

Still doesn't adequately explain why they would. Hamilton is 25 year old 6'6" 230 lb RH shooting puck moving defenseman. Albeit with the rumored baggage. Simmonds is 30 years old and a player that you repeatedly describe as not being very good. Are you really going to tell me that adding in Elliott or Neuvirth balances that out?
